To reprogram the System BIOS, you must first do the following:
1. Check jumpers J7, J8, and J9.
For boards that use the 5 V olt Flash chip, J7 will be on pins 1-2 and
pin 3 will be cut. No jumpers changes are needed to flash a new
BIOS on these boards.
If J7 has a pin 3, then the board is using a 12 V olt Flash chip and J7
needs to be changed to pins 2-3 before flashing to the new BIOS.
When flashing is completed, put J7 back to pins 1-2. J8 and J9
should always be on pins 1-2 in either case.
2. Make sure the CPU is running in ' real m ode' .
FMW will not run if the CPU is operating in a protected or
virtual mode. This m eans that you can not run it with W indows
running or with any m emory manager software. Y ou must
disable any memory manager first. The easiest way to do this
is to:
a. Boot your system from a bootable floppy disk with no
CONFIG .SYS or AUTOEXEC.BA T files, and then run Flash
Memory W riter from a backup copy of your support disk. Y ou
can m ake your back-up floppy bootable when you form at it, and
use one disk for both purposes.
b. If you are using MS-DOS 6.x, you can use the feature that
allows you to bypass the CONFIG .SYS and AUTOEXEC.BA T
file. Y ou do this while pressing <F5> while the "Starting MS-
DOS..." line is on the screen.
There are other ways to accomplish the sam e result. The m ain
point is to make sure no m emory managers are running. If you
are not sure, try running FM W . If it runs, then you have suc-
ceeded. If it displays a warning message about the CPU
mode, you will have to try again.
