  • Page 10: Functional Principle

High-pressure quartz sensors, Type 6213, 6215, 6217 3.2 Functional principle The pressure to be measured acts on the diaphragm, which converts it into a proportional force. This force is transmitted onto the quartz elements, which generate an electrostatic charge under load. A contact spring picks up this (negative) charge and leads it to the connector, where it is converted into a (positive) voltage by the connected charge amplifier.

Installation 4. Installation 4.1 Mounting bore 4.1.1 How to produce a measuring bore When producing the measuring bore it is essential that the threads are concentric with the bore and the sealing part is flat. This is assured without difficulty if the threads are cut in the same setup on the drill. It is enough to use a center point on an ordinary drill, enabling the tap to be centered when cutting by hand.

Installation 4.1.2 Reaming the sealing surface 4.1.2.1 Influence of sealing surface An uneven sealing surface will result in measuring errors, since the stresses at the sealing surface may vary. With a concave sealing surface of only 0.02 mm, the sensor’s sensitivity may vary by up to 2%.

4.2.1 Installation without accessories 4.2.1.1 Type 1100 sealing ring The sealing ring is a patented seal from Kistler made of Cr-Ni steel. The higher the pressure measured rises, the more strongly the sealing ring is pressed against the sealing surface, thereby ensuring a reliable seal over the entire measuring range.

Installation A too high tightening torque may damage the sensor (plas- tic deformation of the front part). CAUTION If the sensor does not seal properly at the defined torque, remove the sensor and inspect the bore and the sensor. 4.2.2 Installation with diaphragm protector 4.2.2.1 Purpose of diaphragm protector The diaphragm protector increases the service life of the sensor by protecting the sensor against splinters and powder particles. Additionally, it slightly delays the effects of thermal shock.

High-pressure quartz sensors, Type 6213, 6215, 6217 4.2.2.3 Service life of the diaphragm protector The service lifetime of the diaphragm protector is less determined by the number of measurements but by the one of installations and removals. Repeated mounting may lead to mechanical deformations such as spreading of the tabs.
