    The main sections of the Control Panel are outlined above. The following is a brief description of each one. - DRAWBARS This section is used to control the sounds of the instrument, which consist of classic Hammond Drawbar tones as well as Transistor Combo Organ and authentic Pipe Organ tones. These are controlled by the Drawbars, Touch-Response Percussion and Vibrato and Leslie animation, as well as a button labeled DRAWBAR which allows you to access editable Parameters quickly.

    186. - PRESET & PEDAL CONTROLS As explained on the previous page, you can change sounds quickly on your XK-5 through the use of the Preset Keys. The PRESET controls allow you to select whether to use the Preset Keys to change the registration for the UPPER Keyboard, the LOWER Keyboard or both simultaneously.

    Introduction Accessory Panel The main connections are found on the Accessory Panel on the back of the XK-5. - AC POWER AC IN Connect an AC Power Cord (provided) to this receptacle. Power Switch This turns the power to the XK-5 “ON” and “OFF.”...

    MIDI OUT Use this port to transmit MIDI data to a connected MIDI device. MIDI IN 1/PEDAL port Use this port to connect the MIDI OUT of a Pedal Clavier such as the Hammond XPK-130 or XPK-200L. MIDI IN 2/OTHER port Use this port to connect a Lower Manual such as the Hammond XLK-5 or another MIDI keyboard.

    The following section explains the basic setup procedure for your XK-5. AC Power Your Hammond XK-5 is shipped from the factory set for 120V AC power. To connect the XK-5 to AC power: Locate the AC Power Cord that came with your XK-5.

    Connecting additional audio equipment The 11-pin Leslie socket on your XK-5 allows you to plug directly into any Leslie speaker having an 11- pin interface. Current models include the 2101, 3300, 122XB, 981 and the Heritage Series (122H, 142H).

    XK-5. Connect the foot switch plug to one of the FOOT CONTROLLER jacks on the back of the XK-5. NOTE: In order to insure proper operation of the Foot Switch, be sure to connect it when the power to the XK-5 is “OFF.” Connecting a Damper Pedal To connect a Damper (piano sustain) Pedal, connect the plug from the pedal into one of the FOOT CONTROLLER jacks on the back of the XK-5.

    Mode. The PLAY Mode allows you to graphically see Drawbar settings, Extra Voice settings, Patch Numbers and Patch Names. The MENU Mode allows you to access and edit the XK-5's software Parameters such as Drawbar Voicing, MIDI Parameters and other advanced functions.

    NOTE: The XK-5 is compliant with USB AUDIO Class 1.0, the generic device driver which comes pre-installed on both PC and Mac computers. This means you can use the USB TO HOST Port to connect the XK-5 to a computer and transmit and receive a MIDI data stream without an exclusive device driver.

    IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ POWER AUTO OFF The XK-5 has a special feature called POWER AUTO OFF which automatically turns the power to the instrument “OFF” if no keys or buttons are pressed for 30 minutes.   • Page 45: Changing Values In Larger Increments

    Sometimes it may be desirable to access a FUNCTION Mode Page more quickly than can be done by using the buttons on the Information Center Display. Because of this, your Hammond XK-5 has what are called “Shortcuts” to many FUNCTION Mode Pages. You can “shortcut” to a FUNCTION Mode Page associated with a particular function by Pressing and Holding a button controlling that function.

    Make sure the power to the XK-5 is “OFF.” With the XK-5 power “OFF,” Press and Hold the DIRECTION “ ” and “ ” buttons. While holding the two DIRECTION buttons, turn the power to the XK-5 “ON.” Continue to hold the DIRECTION buttons until the Information Center Display looks like this: When the above message appears, Release the DIRECTION buttons and wait for the system to finish Loading.

    LOWER Keyboard. NOTE: As explained on page 14, the XK-5 can function in a manner similar to a Hammond Organ with two keyboards and a pedal clavier. This is done by partitioning or “splitting” the single 61-note keyboard into two parts.

  • Page 54: Jazz And Pop Drawbar Registrations

    There are many Drawbar combination which are not imitative of any instrument, but which are immediately recognized as "Hammond Sounds.” The basic Hammond Organ jazz sound is obtained with the first three Drawbars, such as 88 8000 000. When the last white Drawbar is used along with the first three Drawbars, a very pleasing effect is created.

    Pedal Drawbar produces a tone at 8' pitch, or one octave higher. NOTE: The PEDAL TO LOWER button must be “ON,” or a MIDI pedal clavier must be connected to the XK-5 in order to hear the sounds produced by the PEDAL Drawbars.

    PERCUSSION - Touch-Response Percussion An important component of the Hammond Sound is Touch-Response Percussion Control. On a vintage Hammond console organ, this feature is controlled by four tilting tablets on the extreme right of the control panel which look like this: The PERCUSSION controls on the XK-5 consist of four separate buttons, located immediately to the right of the Drawbars, which control harmonic Percussion tones playable from the Upper Keyboard.

    NOTE: Setting this Parameter to C will cause the Percussion tone to sound continuously without decaying. The effect will be similar to that produced by the SECOND VOICE Tab on certain vintage Hammond Organs, such as the H-series or the X-77.

    Each key will sound when played regardless of whether other keys are being held. This replicates the Percussion function on the X-66, Concorde and later model Hammond Organs. Turn the VALUE knob to turn Percussion Touch ON or OF (Off).

    Description The volume level of the Drawbars will be reduced by 3 decibels, or a small amount, when Percussion is “ON” at Normal volume. This replicates the vintage Hammond Organs with Touch-Response Percussion Control (B-3, C-3, A-100, etc.). The volume of the Drawbars will remain at the same level when Percussion is “ON” at Normal volume.

    In addition to traditional Hammond Drawbar tones, starting with software release 3.xx, the Drawbars on the XK-5 can control a number of models of Combo Organs as well as different types of classical Pipe Organs. This Parameter allows you to select which type of organ sounds you want the Drawbars to control.

    The type of combo organ replicated by Vx had drawbar-type controls, but they functioned differently from Hammond Harmonic Drawbars. The first four Drawbars control individual pitches, while the next three are “Mixture” Drawbars which cause multiple pitches to sound. “II,” “III” and “IV” refer to the number of pitches represented by that Drawbar.

    The number underneath “TYPE” should be flashing. TYPE Hammond tone-wheel organs with Vibrato & Chorus were manufactured from 1949 through 1975. During that time, several different types of vibrato circuits were employed, particularly line boxes of different construction. This Parameter creates the effect of different types of Vibrato delay lines. The data chart below shows the options you may select.

There are four groups of Custom Sets: Custom Tone Wheel Custom Leslie Cabinet Custom Pedal Registration Custom Contact Custom Pipe. In this way you can include multiple Parameter settings as part of a Combination, Patch or Bundle, and include the same settings in multiple Patches.

    Preparing a USB Flash Drive for use with the XK-5 In order to use a USB Flash Drive with the XK-5, several special directories or Folders have to be created on the Flash Drive itself.
