DESCRIPTION OF DEVICE

Intended use

The mechanical flat scale supports physicians in decision-making regarding diagnosis or therapy, based on the patient's weight or weight changes.

User qualification

The device may only be used by persons with sufficient expertise.

Patient target group

The scale is intended for persons of any age who can stand independently on the scale and who do not exceed the maximum weight capacity of the scale.

Contraindications

No contraindications are known.

Clinical benefit

The mechanical flat scale supports physicians in decision-making regarding diagnosis or therapy, based on the measured weight.
By that, the mechanical flat scale only provides an indirect clinical benefit.
The physician must perform additional examinations for an accurate diagnosis.

Functional description

With a mechanical dial scale weight is calculated via a load lever system.
Before weighing takes place, the zero point can be manually reset each time with the adjusting wheel.
Verified scales are supplied with a kg scale.
Non-verified scales are supplied with a kg, lbs, kg/lbs, or a kg/sts scale depending on the model.

STARTING UP DEVICE

Removing locking pin

  1. Move the locking pin on the underside of the housing through a quarter turn counter-clockwise.
  2. Pull the locking pin out.

NOTE

  • Put the locking pin in a safe place for subsequent transport of the scale.

Removing transport lock

  • Remove the transport lock from the lower part of the housing.

NOTE

  • Put the transport lock in a safe place for subsequent transport of the scale.
  • You can use the transport lock as a wall spacer (→ Fitting wall spacer).

Fitting wall spacer

If you wish to position the scale close to a wall, seca recommends using the transport lock (see section "Removing transport lock") as a wall spacer. This stops the weighing platform from touching the wall and the measuring result from being incorrect.

  1. Position the transport lock as shown in the adjacent drawing.
  2. Attach the transport lock to the lower part of the housing.

Setting up device

Faulty measurement as a result of devices being set up incorrectly
Soft floors, such as wooden boards, give under the patient's weight and falsify the measuring result. Incorrect ambient conditions or lack of alignment lead to measurement errors.

  • Select a setup location with a level, stable floor in order to achieve precise measuring results.
  • Use the device only in the intended ambient conditions outlined in the section entitled "Technical data".
  • Ensure the device is aligned before using it and every time it changes location.
  • Place the device on a firm, level surface.

WEIGHING

Personal injury/faulty measurement

  • Before using the device each time, perform a function check as described in the corresponding section of these instructions for use.

Adjusting display

To obtain meaningful measured values, you must check before every use that the pointer of the scale reads "0".

  1. Ensure that there is no load on the scale.
  2. Check the current position of the pointer.
  3. Move the adjusting wheel so that the pointer reads "0".
    • Turn clockwise: Pointer moves counter-clockwise
    • Turn counter-clockwise: Pointer moves clockwise

Weighing a patient

Patients can be injured if they fall
People with restricted mobility can fall when they try to step on or off the scale.

  • Support people with limited mobility when they step on and off the scale.
  • Only use this scale for patients who are able to stand on their own when being weighed.

  1. Make sure that the pointer of the scale reads "0".
  2. Ask the patient to step onto the scale and keep still.
  3. Read off the measuring result.
    NOTE
If your scale displays measured values in "lbs" only, you can use the conversion tool to convert measured values to values in kg (→ Conversion tool).
  4. Ask the patient to step off the scale.

HYGIENE TREATMENT

Risk of infection

  • Subject the device to a hygiene treatment at regular intervals as described in this section.

NOTICE!
Damage to device
Unsuitable cleaning agents and disinfectants may damage the sensitive surfaces of the device and lead to transparent components becoming clouded.

  • Do not use aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents.
  • Do not use organic solvents (e.g. white spirit or petroleum spirit).

Cleaning

Cleaning housing

  • If required, moisten a soft cloth with a mild soapy solution and wipe the device over with it.

Cleaning protecting ring and scale (seca 760/761/762)
You can take the protecting ring off the weighing platform to clean the inside of the protecting ring and the scale.

  1. Turn the protecting ring counter-clockwise.
  2. Take the protecting ring off.

NOTICE!
Damage to device
When the protecting ring has been taken off, the pointer and scale of the device are freely accessible. If these parts are damaged, meaningful measuring results will not be possible.

  • Check that the pointer and scale have not been damaged during cleaning.
  1. Clean these parts with a soft cloth moistened with a mild soapy solution:
    • Scale
    • Inside of protecting ring
  2. Put the protecting ring back on the housing.
  3. Turn the protecting ring clockwise to re-secure.

Disinfecting

  1. Disinfect the device at regular intervals with a disinfectant suitable for sensitive surfaces and acrylic glass (e.g. 70% ethanol).
  2. Follow the instructions for use for the disinfectant.
  3. Disinfect the device as follows:
    • Moisten a soft cloth with disinfectant and wipe down the device with it.
    • Comply with the intervals, see table:
Interval Component
Before every measurement with direct skin contact Weighing platform
After every measurement with direct skin contact Weighing platform
As required Protecting ring and viewing window

Sterilizing

The device must not be sterilized.

FUNCTION CHECK

  • Perform a function check before each use.

A complete function check includes:

  • A visual inspection for mechanical damage
  • A test of the alignment of the device
  • A visual and function check of the display elements
  • A function check of all the controls shown in the section entitled "Overview"
  • A function check of the optional accessories

If you find faults or deviations during the function check, first try to remedy the fault with the aid of the "Troubleshooting" section in this document.

Personal injury
If you find faults or deviations during the function check which you are unable to remedy with the aid of the "Troubleshooting" section in this document, you must not use the device.

  • Have the device repaired by seca Service or an authorized service partner.
  • Follow the section entitled "Servicing" in this document.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If faults occur when operating the device, first attempt to remedy them yourself using the following table. If the fault persists, contact seca Service or an authorized service partner.

Fault Cause Remedy
Scale shows no weight although there was a load on it The device is not ready for use Remove transport lock

The unit does not show a plausible weight value

Before weighing pointer does not read 0 Adjust display
Force shunt: scale is e.g. touching a wall, or patient is supporting his/her weight against the wall
  • Move scale away from wall
  • Use transport lock as wall spacer
  • Ask patient to stand on the scale unaided

  • If your scale is unable to display non-SI units, you can use the conversion tool in this document.

NOTICE!
Inconsistent measuring results

  • Before you save and continue using measured values determined using this device (e.g. in seca software or in an EMR system), ensure that the measured values are plausible.
  • If measured values have been sent to seca software or to an EMR system, ensure before continuing to use them that the measured values are plausible and assigned to the correct patient.

Handling packaging material

Risk of suffocation
Packaging materials made of plastic film (bags) present a risk of suffocation.

  • Store packaging material out of the reach of children.
  • If the original packaging material is no longer available, only use plastic bags with safety holes to reduce the risk of suffocation. Use recyclable materials if possible.

NOTE
Store the original packaging material for future use (e.g. returning for servicing).
