Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 1 Scope & Audience This manual provides instructions for safe installation and use of Interrogator Units within the CBT 7800000 series. This covers the QuantX and ODH-5X variants. Operation of the software used to control the IU and record and visualise data is described elsewhere.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 2 CBT 7800000 Interrogator Unit (IU) System overview General Description The CBT 7800000 Interrogator Unit (IU) is available in two variants, intended for a variety of Distributed Fibre Sensing (DFS) applications. The QuantX is optimised for monitoring and protection of long linear assets and infrastructure, whereas the ODH-5X variant is optimised for seismic profiling, hydraulic fracture monitoring and flow monitoring in down-hole for fibres longer than 10 km.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 switches are in the Laser Enable position (and the rear panel Interlock Port is enabled) the red “Laser” LED is illuminated. The “Power” LED shows the status of critical internal power supplies. The “Status” LED gives a high level indicator of the IU’s status – red indicating that the IU is in a state where normal data acquisition cannot take place or if persistent, a fault.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 • GPS input & output – (ODH-5X, Option for QuantX) See Section 2.2.6 • Trigger – (ODH-5X variant only) - See Section 2.2.7 The E2000 connector for the sense fibre is mounted on the faceplate, which can be removed for cleaning the connectors –...
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 2.2.4 Laser Interlock To enable Laser Emission the Front and Rear key-switches must be in the Laser Enable (vertical) position, and connection must be made between pins 1&2 and pins 3&4 of the laser interlock connector The laser interlock connector can be wired to a switch triggered by the opening of a door or enclosure such that when the door/enclosure is opened, the lasers will be automatically disabled.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 The IU is designed to operate on any fibre which is single-mode at 1550 nm. We recommend using fibres which are compliant with ITU T G.652 or equivalent (for example Corning® SMF 28®). For operation on other fibres, contact OptaSense for information on optimizing the configuration.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 3 Installation Handling The IU’s mass is 31 kg, therefore care must be taken when lifting: a two person lift may be required. Please consult your HSE function for guidance. Handles are located on the front and rear. These should be used for lifting or manoeuvring the IU.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 Figure 3-1 - Shipping Mount Blanks Diagram 3.3.2 Fitting Shipping Mounts The shipping mounts MUST be replaced prior to shipping the unit by land, sea or air to prevent permanent damage to the IU. Failure to install the shipping mounts prior to transport will invalidate the warranty and may incur additional repair charges.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 Cabinet Mounting 3.4.1 CAUTION for Cabinet Mounting The mass of the IU is 31 kg. The user must ensure that the cabinet will remain stable, particularly when the IU is to be mounted high in the cabinet. It may be necessary to secure the cabinet to the floor or walls to ensure stability both during and after installation.

Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 Step 5 – Insert IU into rack (2 persons required) • Carefully insert the IU into the rack, ensuring the slide inner engages with the bracket assembly. • After around 100 mm of insertion the extraction locks will engage which need to be depressed to allow the slide to be fully inserted.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 Thermal Management The maximum operating ambient temperature (measured 25 mm in front of the Front Panel air intakes) is 50°C. The built-in Fan Module must be fitted and connected at all times. The installation location must allow air to enter the front panel intakes and to circulate freely around the Heatsink, and with clear space for the fan exhaust above the rear panel heatsink.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 4 Laser safety The QuantX and ODH-5X IUs generate Class 3R invisible laser radiation. When correctly connected to an optical fibre, the emitted radiation is completely enclosed within the optical fibre cable, however, if the continuity of the optical fibre is broken (deliberately or accidentally) then Invisible Laser Radiation will become accessible.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 5 Operation Connection To operate the IU system, first connect the sense fibre, control ethernet cable, optical data cable and power as per Section 2.2. Trigger and GPS cables should also be connected where these functions are required. Start up Turn on the main power switch on the rear panel.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 5.3.1 Modes of Operation The IU produces Quantitative phase and amplitude in all operating modes. Additionally, the user has the flexibility of operating in either “Single Carrier” or “Dual Carrier” mode. In Single Carrier mode a single pulse is launched, and the backscatter analyzed to produce the quantitative data set.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 6 Maintenance General In normal use the IU should not require any user maintenance other than ensuring the cleanliness of the optical connector. If required, the outer surface of the system can be cleaned using a cloth moistened with water or Isopropanol (IPA).

Using a proprietary lint-free bud, clean the bore of the uniter ensuring it is free of all contamination.
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 Fuse Replacement If a fuse requires replacement this can be carried out by withdrawing the fuse drawer from the IEC inlet, removing the failed fuse and replacing it with a suitable 5 mm x 20 mm 4 A anti-surge fuse [LitelFuse 0213004.MXP].
Proprietary CBT 7800914 Issue 10 Figure 6-6 - Fuse location Fan Module Replacement In the event of fan failure, diagnosed by an alarm generated by the IU, or by over-temperature alarms being shown to be due to failed fan, a replacement CBT 7807000 Fan Module supplied with the IU should be fitted. To replace the Fan Module, switch off the two laser key switches and remove the keys to prevent the lasers being re-activated, set the mains switch to Off and remove the IEC power cable.
