IBM Systems Safety Notices (G229–9054) publication, which is on the CD-ROM that accompanies this product. The following notices and statements are used in IBM documents. They are listed below in order of increasing severity of potential hazards. Follow the links for more detailed descriptions and examples of the danger, caution, and attention notices in the sections that follow.
Page 16
(D004) A general electrical danger notice provides instructions on how to avoid shock hazards when servicing equipment. Unless instructed otherwise, follow the procedures in the following danger notice. Converged Switch B32 Installation, Service, and User Guide...
Electrical voltage and current from power, telephone, and communication cables are hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard: v Connect power to this unit only with the IBM provided power cord. Do not use the IBM provided power cord for any other product.
As an added precaution, safety labels are often installed directly on products or product components to warn of potential hazards. These can be either danger or caution notices, depending upon the level of the hazard. Converged Switch B32 Installation, Service, and User Guide...
The actual product safety labels may differ from these sample safety labels: DANGER Hazardous voltage, current, or energy levels are present inside any component that has this label attached. Do not open any cover or barrier that contains this label. (L001) DANGER Rack-mounted devices are not to be used as a shelf or work space.
Attempting to move the drawer partially or completely out of the rack might cause the rack to become unstable or cause the drawer to fall out of the rack. (R001 part 2 of 2) xviii Converged Switch B32 Installation, Service, and User Guide...
Rack relocation (19″ rack) CAUTION: Removing components from the upper positions in the rack cabinet improves rack stability during relocation. Follow these general guidelines whenever you relocate a populated rack cabinet within a room or building: v Reduce the weight of the rack cabinet by removing equipment starting at the top of the rack cabinet.
Product recycling and disposal Refer to the IBM Systems Environmental Notices and User Guide (Z125-5823) on the environmental notices CD for translated environmental statements and information regarding product recycling and disposal. For instructions on removing the battery from this product, see “Removing the battery”...
(SAN) technologies. It describes how to install, service, and use the IBM Converged Switch B32 (machine type 3758, model B32, and model L32). Throughout this document, the product is referred to as the B32, or simply the switch. The base unit of model 3758-L32 is licensed only for Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE), while the 3758-B32 model is licensed for both CEE and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE).
When you use any of the Brocade documents, you will notice that the model numbers reflect the original Brocade products. Table 2 provides a product matrix for you to use to correlate the Brocade products and models to the IBM product names and machine types and model numbers. Products withdrawn from marketing are not listed.
3758-B32, which is licensed for Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), Fibre Channel (FC), Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE), and traditional Ethernet protocols; and the 3758-L32, which is a CEE-only switch in the base unit configuration. The IBM Converged Switch B32 features a top-of-rack, 1U, 32-port multiprotocol design that supports Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), Fibre Channel, Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE), and traditional Ethernet protocols.
FCoE and Layer 2 capabilities The switch has the following capabilities for the Ethernet functions: Note: FCoE is available on the 3758-B32 and the 3758-L32 with FC7408, FC and Converged Activation. v 24 ports 10 GbE CEE v Provides a low latency, lossless, deterministic interconnect required for FCoE...

The equipment in the cabinet is grounded through a reliable branch circuit connection and maintain ground at all times. Do not rely on a secondary connection to a branch circuit, such as a power strip. Converged Switch B32 Installation, Service, and User Guide...
v Airflow must always be from front to back with respect to the rack. The device must not interfere with the cooling of other systems in the rack. Fillers must be used as appropriate in the rack to ensure there is no recirculation of heated exhaust air back to the front of the rack.
Be sure to use the referenced parts when you perform each step. Before you start the rack-mount installation process, locate the rack-mount slides and the mounting bracket that are provided in the shipping container. Converged Switch B32 Installation, Service, and User Guide...

Creating a serial connection You will perform all basic configuration tasks in this guide using a serial connection. To create a serial connection to the switch, complete the following steps: 1. Remove the plug from the serial console port (if any) and insert the serial cable provided with the switch.
By default, all switches are in the GMT time zone (0,0). If all switches in a fabric are in one time zone, it is possible for you to keep the time zone setup at the default setting. Converged Switch B32 Installation, Service, and User Guide...
v System services that have already started will reflect the time zone changes only after the next reboot. v Time zone settings persist across failover for high availability. Local time synchronization You can synchronize the local time of the principal or primary fabric configuration server (FCS) switch to a maximum of eight external network time protocol (NTP) servers.
