The Optical Gain Block consists of an Erbium Doped Fiber in conjunction with single or dual 980 nm pump lasers for high optical power efficiency. The Control Board monitors and controls the Optical Gain Block and feeds the front-panel LED indicators as shown in Section 3.5.

This is due to the importance of the EDFA, as this module will usually drive a large portion of the optical distribution network. Some may be changed via external communications. The unit is designed for local and remote monitoring and control.
