M3 Sonar PHS Installation Manual Installation summary Installation of the M3 Sonar PHS system requires a number of specific procedures and software settings. Two people are required for this installation. Context An overall installation procedure is provided. Note In order to obtain maximum safety and optimal performance, it is very important that the installation procedures in this manual are complied to.
Page 21
Specific fasteners and consumables you will need for the M3 Sonar PHS installation are included in the supplied accessory kits. The following tools and items are required for the M3 Sonar PHS installation and are not included in the standard delivery. You must purchase these items locally.
Attaching the Pole Mount to the vessel The M3 Sonar PHS is designed to be installed on a vessel of opportunity. However, we recognize that there are no two vessels exactly alike. Depending on the intended use, you may choose either a semi-permanent or a temporary mounting arrangement.
Page 23
Attaching the Pole Mount to the vessel – Welding rod or filler metal compatible with the vessel and Weld Down plate material Caution Welding is a dangerous process that can cause burns, eye damage, and exposure to harmful fumes. Always follow proper safety procedures and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including welding helmet, gloves, fire-resistant clothing, and respirator.
Page 24
M3 Sonar PHS Installation Manual Example of Pole Mount attached directly to the vessel: We recommend semi-permanent mounting as the most secure method. However, we understand modifications may not be possible on the available vessel of opportunity. In this case, temporary mounting methods are also possible. Temporary mounting methods include clamping or bolting a board to the vessel.
Page 25
Attaching the Pole Mount to the vessel Regardless of how you mount the M3 Sonar PHS, the most important task is to make sure the Pole Mount is secure so that it doesn’t fall off the vessel during use. Note There are many different ways to do this installation, and many vessels have established their own procedures and best practices for this task.
Page 26
M3 Sonar PHS Installation Manual If you wish to attach the Pole Mount directly to the vessel, secure the Base Plate to the vessel. Position the Pole Mount’s Base Plate in an appropriate location on the vessel, such as on the gunnel.
Page 27
Attaching the Pole Mount to the vessel Position the Weld Down plate in an appropriate location on the vessel, such as on the gunnel. Mark the exact location for welding, and make sure the plate is properly aligned with the Base Plate attachment points. Clamp the plate firmly in place to prevent movement during welding.
Unit is mounted on the MRU flange. The Sonar Head and sound speed sensor are mounted on the M3 Sonar flange. Prerequisites • To install the M3 Sonar PHS system, you must have basic mechanical skills. At least two persons must do the installation together. • Attach the Pole Mount to the vessel.
Page 29

Installing the Seapath 130 sensor unit The M3 Sonar PHS Pole Mount comes with a custom mounting bracket for the Seapath 130 sensor unit, called the Seapath sensor flange. The Seapath 130 sensor unit is mounted onto this flange, which is attached to the top of the GPS Mast.
Installing the Seapath 130 sensor unit Procedure Lower the Pole Mount into a deployment position. Stabilize the Z-pole with a block and tackle set or by employing multiple people to hold the pole in place. Remove the hinge bracket (A) by unfastening the two long bolts and two short bolts securing the bracket in place.
Page 36

Cable layout and interconnections Mate and fully secure the locking ring so that it is hand tight. Hold the cable connector while tightening the engaging nut. Over-tightening may damage the connector. Install the dummy plug into the other connector on the MRU. Caution The Motion Reference Unit can be damaged if it is turned on without the dummy plug installed.
M3 Sonar PHS Installation Manual You may also wish to tape down the cables at the bottom of the Pole Mount to minimize cable movement during the survey. Connecting the Sonar Processor and power supply to the Interface Unit The Sonar Processor and power supply connect to a breakout box. The breakout box connects to the M3 Sonar Interface Unit with a 50-foot deck cable.
