8.20 Performing a Wall Switch
Continuity Test
Use one of the following procedures to test continuity as
determined by the Water Heater model being serviced.
8.20.1 Gas Only (Standard and EXT)
Models

Gas Only (Standard and EXT) Models
1. Turn off power to the wall switch.
2. Remove the two screws securing the wall switch in
place.
3. Pull the switch out from the wall.
4. Note the orientation of the wires on the wall switch.
5. Disconnect the wires from the wall switch.
6. Set your multi-meter to the Ohms resistance setting.
7. Touch the leads to terminals 2 and 3.
8. When the gas switch is turned on, you should have
continuity across the two terminals.
If there is no continuity, then the wall switch is faulty.

(Standard and EXT) Models

Gas/Electric Combination (Standard and EXT) Models
1. Turn off power to the wall switch.
2. Remove the four screws securing the wall switch in
place.
3. Pull the switch out from the wall.
4. Note the orientation of the wires on the wall switch.
5. Disconnect the wires from the wall switch, with the
exception of the jumper wire.
6. Set your multi-meter to the Ohms resistance setting.

Gas Switch Continuity Test
7. Touch the leads to terminals 1 and 6.
8. When the gas switch is turned On and the electric
switch is turned Off, you should have continuity
across the two terminals.
If there is no continuity, then the gas switch is faulty.
