Water Heater
4. The readings should confirm continuity/closed
circuit at Water Heater temperatures below 140 °F
(60 °C) ±10 °F (±6 °C) for a thermostat or below
180 °F (82 °C) ±10° (±6 °C) for an E.C.O.

Consult the operating manual for your multi-meter
for specific device function.
If the reading shows no continuity/open circuit, it
indicates a faulty thermostat or E.C.O.

Replacing a Thermostat or E.C.O.

1. Perform the steps in "Shutting Down the Water
Heater" on page 32.
2. Disconnect the wires connecting the thermostat
and the E.C.O. to the components applicable to the
model. See "Component Locations" on page 11
for more detail.
3. Remove the black faceplate cover.
4. Bend two of the three tabs outward at the thermostat
or E.C.O. location.

5. Rotate the existing thermostat or E.C.O. to align the
notch with the tab that is not bent outward.
6. Pull out the existing thermostat or E.C.O.
7. Slide the new thermostat or E.C.O. metal eyelets into
the mounting location.
8. Align the notch on the new thermostat or E.C.O.
with the tab that is not bent outward.
9. Push down and rotate the thermostat or E.C.O. until
the notch is no longer over the tab.
10. Confirm the terminals are in the proper position to
install the faceplate.
11. Bend the remaining two tabs back into place over the
thermostat or E.C.O.
12. Confirm that the thermostat or E.C.O is seated
properly on the tank.
– The spring is behind the plastic cover.
– All three tabs are bent over the thermostat or
E.C.O. to hold it in place.
13. Reinstall the faceplate and wiring removed in step 2.

Performing a Thermal Cut-Off Continuity Check
1. Perform the steps in "Replacing a Thermal Cut-Off"
on page 34 to remove the thermal cut-off.
2. Set your multi-meter to the Ohms resistance setting.
