8.12 Replacing the Heating Element

Replacing the Heating Element
1. Perform the steps in "Shutting Down the Water
Heater" on page 32.
2. Let the water in the Water Heater cool or let the
water run until it is cool.
3. Turn off the main water supply (the pump or water
hook up source).
4. Remove the external drain plug to drain the water out
of the Water Heater.
5. Locate the relay access cover and remove.

If you do not see a relay access cover, the relay is at
the rear of the Water Heater and the element is in a
plastic box at the rear of the Water Heater.
6. Disconnect the two wires going to the heating
element from the relay.
7. Determine if you have a bolt-in or screw-in heating
element model.
– A screw-in model has no bolts.
– A bolt-in model has four bolts securing the
element in place.

Bolt-in elements are used on older models. All
current and new models use screw-in elements.
8. Remove the heating element:
– Screw-in model: turn the heating element to
unscrew and pull the element out.
– Bolt-in model: remove the four bolts securing the
element in place and pull the element out.
9. Reverse steps 1–8 to install the new heating element.

Replacing a Control Board
1. Perform the steps in "Shutting Down the Water
Heater" on page 32.
2. Disconnect power to the Water Heater.
3. Unplug the wiring harness from the control board.
4. Disconnect the electrode wire from the ignitor.
5. Remove the screws at the top and bottom of the
control board.
6. Lift out the control board.
7. Reverse steps 1–6 to install the new control board.
