6.2 Error-Based Diagnostics

The Dometic wall switch has a red LED fault light that is
energized by sending DC voltage from the blue wire on
the control board. The red light illuminates to indicate an
identified operational error. Refer to the following table to
diagnose system errors based on the Water Heater model.
Model
Fault Description
Gas/Electric
The E.C.O. is in open circuit or
Combination
becomes an open circuit during
the heating cycle.
The gas solenoid valve has no
resistance.

Diagnostic Question
Thermostat (Standard) Continued
Is there excessive weeping coming from
the pressure/temperature (P/T) relief
valve?
The gas solenoid valve fails to open and
there is no spark.
Does the gas/electric combination
model operate using gas but does not
operate on electric power?
Is the gas/electric combination model
not operating while using either gas or
electric power?
On Demand Model: When the water
is running, does the appliance fail to
attempt ignition and the fan fail to run?
Winter/Summer Setting Screw (On Demand Models)
When the water is running, does the
appliance fail to attempt ignition and the
fan fail to run?
Does the E.C.O keep tripping?
Is the water temperature at the faucet too
hot [above or below 110 °F–115 °F
(43.3 °C–46.1 °C)]?
Is the water temperature at the faucet too
cold [below 110 °F–115 °F
(44 °C–46 °C)]?
Possible Cause
The E.C.O. or thermostat is
defective.
The gas solenoid valve is
defective.
Action Based On Status
The thermostat may be out of calibration.
Check to see if the water is getting too hot.
Confirm that the thermostat is seated on the
tank properly and is tight to the water tank.
Some weeping or dripping occurs as the
water heats up, this is normal operation.
Check the P/T relief valve.
Wall Switch
The wall switch may be defective or wired
incorrectly. Perform a continuity test.
The wall switch may be defective or wired
incorrectly. Perform a continuity test.
When the water temperature is above or below
110 °F–115 °F (44 °C–46 °C), the winter/
summer setting screw may need adjustment.
Set the screw at the default 12 o'clock
setting.
If the water is too hot, turn the screw in small
increments to the right (clockwise) until the
desired water temperature is reached.
If the water is too cold, turn the screw in
small increments to the left
(counter-clockwise) until the desired water
temperature is reached.
Recommended Action
Test and diagnose the E.C.O.
Test and diagnose the gas
solenoid valve.
