Front end
With the Ethernet card in place, output is in TCP/IP on Ethernet.
A front end is then required to connect TCP/IP to XNS.
Data streams
The front end also converts the PostScript data streams output of
Macintosh application software to .IMG files for printing.
PostScript masters may contain full color specification, in which
case full color to highlight color mapping is required. The front
end performs the color mapping automatically when it converts
PostScript data to .IMG files. If exact printer colors are specified
through the use of a facsimile palette, then the colors print
exactly as specified.
To determine the appropriate connectivity option for your Sun
workstation environment, consider the interface option you will
use and the data streams to be output by your software
applications.
The Sun workstation connects to a 4890 through an Ethernet
interface. The equipment needed for connectivity depends upon
the communication protocol and the data streams used. The
workstations communicate to the 4890 LPS through the Xerox
Network System (XNS) using XNS protocols.
Ethernet with XNS protocol
A Sun workstation can be configured to produce XNS protocol
output on Ethernet. This communication protocol is acceptable
to the 4890 without conversion.
