Electronic printing Advantages XEROX 4890 HIGHLIGHT COLOR LPS PRODUCT REFERENCE The Xerox 4890 HighLight Color Laser Printing System (LPS) brings highlight color capability to the world of electronic printing. Through advanced imaging technology known as tri- level xerography, this printer has the capacity for production printing.
  • Page 8: Highlight Color

Uses for highlight color in your documents How highlight color is created The 4890 is a HighLight Color Laser Printing System. Highlight color is the use of one primary color and black in their pure forms (solid color or solid black) or mixed to create tones, which are a mixture of color with black or white.
  • Page 9: Specifying 4890 Colors

Each color has been defined as an ink, a term used to refer to a 4890 color. Inks (colors) are defined in an ink catalog file (identified by the .ICT extension on the file). Your 4890 comes with an ink catalog containing a large set of 4890 inks. Ink referencing...

Color support for the 4890 LPS is provided through host-resident software, such as CompuSet and other third-party document composition systems. These software packages also reference inks from ink catalog files.

92 pages per minute, the system can generate multiple copies of reports and other documents as originals from the printer. The 4890 can even print color on your documents without diminishing throughput performance. By giving operators and programmers the capability to program the print job, repetitive jobs are handled easily and consistently, and the printer can print documents at the maximum capacity.

  • Page 45: Connecting The Printer And The Environment

The “Connectivity overview“ section provides an overview of the types of connectivity hardware required for 4890 systems. Connectivity includes hardware and software that translates the output from the application software into a format the printer understands.
  • Page 46 Communication protocols Workstation environments and some mainframes are connected to the 4890 LPS by means of a local area network (LAN). The 4890 can be connected directly to an Ethernet LAN using Xerox Network Services (XNS) protocol. Ethernet LANs using a protocol other than XNS require a bridge that can convert the protocol used to XNS.
  • Page 47: Overview Of Connectivity Requirements For Mainframes

An online interface can be either a direct cable connection or a remote connection using a modem. A host mainframe and a 4890 printer may also be connected to a local area network (LAN). Or, if desired, data from a host mainframe may be printed on a 4890 through an offline (tape drive) connection.
  • Page 48: Interfaces Supported By The Printer

At present, most workstation applications produce PostScript data streams. Therefore, most workstation environments require a front end as part of their hardware connection to the 4890. Exceptions are the applications for Sun workstations that produce Interpress data streams, and PC applications that produce line printer and LCDS data streams.

  • Page 52: Communication Protocols Required By The Printer

The communication protocols for many non-IBM compatible mainframe platforms can be converted to allow printing on the 4890. This conversion is done through the use of an optional interface. Communication protocols compatible with Dataproducts, Centronics, and many other printers can be converted by third-party interfaces into protocols that the 4890 can accept.

Conversion of PostScript data streams Front end XEROX 4890 HIGHLIGHT COLOR LPS PRODUCT REFERENCE It is possible for a network connection to the 4890 to use more than one communication module. For example, the Shiva FASTPATH communication module converts AppleTalk protocol on an AppleTalk network to TCP/IP on Ethernet.
  • Page 54: Connectivity Options For Ibm And Compatible Mainframes

IBM and IBM-compatible mainframes can be connected to a 4890 through an online direct interface, a remote interface, or a network. Online direct interface The IBM direct interface, also called a channel interface, uses the IBM 3211 or 4245 protocols as shown in figure 4-8.
  • Page 55 Application software used with IBM and IBM-compatible hosts in an online connection generally produces printer output in line printer or LCDS (Xerox metacode) data streams. For those products that produce other data streams, such as AFP, translators are available that convert the output to LCDS. None of these formats require further conversion, so a front end processor is not necessary.
