LPS CONNECTIONS

Network interface
A DEC VAX/VMS mainframe is connected to a 4890 through an
Ethernet LAN. Multiple solutions are present for this
environment.
SPUR System 534: The SPUR System 534, available from the
Xerox Connection, provides network connection. It should be
noted that any VAX system utilizing TCP/IP in the VMS
environment requires the Digital TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS
(or equivalent), if it is not already present.
Xerox XNS 5.0 for VMS: If the Xerox XNS for 5.0 for the VMS
software package is used, no communications protocol
conversion is required. If XNS 5.0 is not used, then a bridge that
provides connectivity between the VAX Ethernet TCP/IP or
DECnet protocol and the selected Xerox interface is required.
Note: XNS 5.0 for VMS is limited to text printing only.
Entire 400/600: The Entire FIBRE 400/600 front end processor
serves as a bridge for TCP/IP.
FunAsset TNxxxx: In Rank Xerox, the FunAsset TNxxxx series
provides network connectivity through a DECserver 250, or
equivalent. The FunAsset interface is also capable of providing a
local or remote communications interface.
Data streams
In these configurations, application output can be either
Interpress, LCDS (Xerox metacode), or PostScript, depending on
the interface option selected.
The Entire FIBRE 400/600 solution converts PostScript data
streams to .IMG files.
PostScript masters may contain full color specification, in which
case full color to highlight color mapping is required. The front
end performs the color mapping automatically when it converts
PostScript data to .IMG files.
If the data stream is line printer or LCDS, color is implemented
through enhanced PDL or metacode commands. Refer to the
Xerox 4890 HighLight Color LPS PDL Reference for more
information.
