oils available today provide better engine lu-
brication that can outlast tradit ional petrole-
um-based oils, making them a smart choice
for use throughout the life of your Audi.
Whether you use synthetic or petroleum -
based engine oil, the oil that you use must
conform to Audi's oil quality standard
VW 502 00 (vehicles with gasoline engine) or
VW 507 00 (vehicles with diesel engine) to
help keep you r vehicle's engine running
smoothly and help prevent the formation of
harmful depos its , somet imes called "sludge,"
that over t ime can lead to expensive repairs.
At the time of pri nting, engine oils available in
the U.S. and Canada that meet the exacti ng
specifications of Audi oi l standard VW 502 00
(vehicles wit h gasol ine engine) or VW 507 00
(vehicles wi t h diesel engine) are synthetic en-
gine oi ls. This does not mean, however, that
every synthetic engine oil will meet Aud i oil
standard VW 502 00 (vehicles with gasoli ne
engine) or VW 507 00 (vehicles w ith diesel
engine). So always be sure that you use an ap-
proved oil.
To help prevent the fo rmation of harmful de-
posits use only oi l w ith the fo ll ow ing specifi-
cations printed on the oil container :
- Audi oil standard VW 502 00 (gasoline en-
gine)
- Audi oil standard VW 507 00 (diesel en-
gine)
Oil conta iner labels may carry t he specifi ca-
tion singly or in com binat ion wit h ot her desig-
nations and oil quality standards.
Viscosity
Engine oils are graded according to their vis-
cosity . The proper viscosity grade oil for your
engine depends on climactic or seasonal con-
dit ions where you dr ive. You can use oi l w ith a
viscosity grade of SAE SW40 across all te m-
peratu re ranges f or normal driving conditions.
However, if engine oil viscosity grade SAE
SW40 is not available, you can also use viscos-
ity grade SAE SW-30 or SAE OW-40 as long as
it meets Audi oil quality standard VW 502 00
(vehicles w ith gasoline engine) or VW 50 7 00
(vehicles w ith diesel engine) specifications .
Because eng ine oil t hat meet s the Audi oil
sta ndard may not be availab le everywhere
when you need it, we strong ly recommend
t hat you always carry with you an extra quart
(liter) of oil that expressly conf orms to the
VW 502 00 (vehicles with gasoline engine) or
VW 507 00 (vehicles with diesel engine) spec-
ification , in case you have to top off t he oi l
wh ile on the road.
Applies to vehicles with gasoline engine on-
ly: Only if the level of the oil is at or below the
min imum mark on the oil dipstick - and no oi l
that expressly conforms to Audi oil standard
VW 502 00 specificat ions is available - may
you t op off with a high quali ty engine oil, pref-
erably synthe tic- based, t hat meet s ACEA A3
or API SM specificat ions, but even then, only
in viscosity grades SAE SW-40, SAE SW-30, or
SAE OW-40 . However, during t he ent ire time
between oil change intervals, never top off
with more than a total of 0.5 qt/liter engine
oil that does not conform to Audi oil specifica-
t ion VW 502 00 .
Applies to vehicles with diesel engine only:
Only if the level of the oil is at or below the
min imum mark on the oil dipstick - and no oi l
that expressly conforms to Audi oil standard
VW 507 00 specificat ions is available - may
you t op off with a high quality engine oil , that
meet s ACEA C3 or API CF specifica t ions, but
even then, on ly in viscosity grades SAE
SW-4 0, SAE SW-30, or SAE OW-40. However,
during the entire time between oi l change in-
terva ls, never top off with more than a tota l
of 0 .5 qt/liter engine oil that does not con-
form to Audi oil specification VW 507 00.
