standard specified for your vehicle's engine

Using any other oil can cause serious engine
damage.

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade-
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving parts
.
In order to provide effective
lu
brication and cool-
ing of
int
ernal engine components, all interna
l
combustion engines consume a certai
n
amount
of oil.
Oil
consumption var ies from engine to en-
gine and may change significant ly
over
the life of

the engine. Typically, engines with a specif ied
break-in period (see
¢
page 177) consume more
oil
dur ing the break-in period than they consume
after oil consumption has stabili zed.
Under normal cond itions
,
the rate of oi
l con-
sumption depends on t he quality and viscosity of
the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient tem
-
perature and road condit ions. Further factors are
the amount of
oil
di lution from water
condensa-
tion or fuel residue and the oxidat ion level of the
oil.
As any engine is subject to wear as mileage
builds up, t he oil consump
ti
on may increase
over
t ime unt

become necessary.
With

these variab les coming into play, no

e of oil consumpt ion can be estab-
