Troubleshooting
Problem
Engine emits black, gray, or
blue smoke
Engine overheats

Cause
Restricted or dirty air cleaner.
Incorrect type of fuel.
Engine burning oil.
Electronic control system problem or basic
engine problem.
Cracked or damaged exhaust filter.
Dirty fuel injectors.
Restricted or dirty air cleaner.
Insufficient coolant in cooling system.
Insufficient engine oil.
Dirty radiator core.
Cooling system needs flushing.
Engine overloaded.
Loose or faulty fan belt.
Faulty or wrong type of thermostat(s).
Faulty radiator cap.
Faulty temperature gauge or sender.
Incorrect grade of fuel.
Damaged or leaking cylinder head gasket.
Faulty coolant pump.
Faulty thermostat(s).
Faulty temperature gauge or temperature
sender.
Faulty cylinder head gasket.
Cracked cylinder head or block.
Leaking cylinder liner seals.
Pitted cylinder liners.
Leaking oil cooler.
Faulty oil cooler O-rings.
Leaking EGR cooler system.
Faulty coolant pump seal; weep hole
plugged; coolant leaking through bearing.
Solution
Replace air cleaner element as
required.
Drain fuel and replace with proper
grade, type, and quality of fuel for oper-
ating condition.
Contact a GMASD.
Replace air cleaner element as
required.
Fill cooling system to proper level.
Check radiator and hoses for loose
connections or leaks. See Adding Cool-
ant.
Check oil level. Add oil as required.

Flush coolant system.
Reduce engine load.
Check automatic belt tensioner and
belts. Replace as required.
Test thermostat opening temperature,
replace thermostats as required.
Replace radiator cap as required.
Check coolant temperature with ther-
mometer and replace if necessary.
Drain fuel and replace with proper
grade, and quality of fuel for operating
condition.
Contact a GMASD.
Test and replace thermostats as
required.
Check gauge, sender, and connec-
tions.
Contact a GMASD.
