(3) How to Change Tones
The basic design of a GS sound
source
lets you select among
a maximum
of 16,384
different sounds
("tones") upon command of an external MIDI device (actually, right now
there is no sound source that has all of 16,384 different tones).
In conventional
MIDI
devices,
tones are identified
by a "Program
Change"
number
between
1 and 128, which means that you have a maximum of only 128 different tones to
choose from.
This is hardly enough for the wide variety of sounds you would want to have
in a library for even the most basic uses.
The GS Format, however, combines the Program Change number with what is called the
"Bank Select"
numbers* (of which there are 128) in MIDI, greatly increasing the range of
selectable tones.
