MV Units Only - Starting the Pilot

The pilot flame ignites the main burners. Without it, the heater will not turn on. The pilot will need to be lit if the gas
supply was interrupted or if the heater encounters adverse conditions. This is a safety feature. If the pilot turns off
frequently, call your dealer for information.
We recommend you leave the pilot lit during the heating season. You may wish to turn it off during the warmer
months to conserve fuel (turn the gas control valve to "OFF").
To start the pilot follow the directions below:
The barrier screen must be secured in place when starting the pilot with the glass on.
WARNING: If the pilot does not light after 15 seconds (see
instructions below) remove the screen and glass assemblies before
attempting to light the pilot a second time. This allows you to smell
for gas inside the sealed firebox to prevent gas buildup. If pilot does
not light after second attempt, contact your dealer for service.
HINT: You may wish to remove any logs (or glass, pilot
shield, etc.) that obstruct your view of the pilot
NOTE: Set ON/OFF switch to "OFF", or set the
thermostat to lowest setting (if applicable).
a
Push gas control knob in slightly and turn clockwise
to "OFF" position. NOTE: Gas control knob will not
turn unless it is pressed in slightly. DO NOT FORCE.
Wait five minutes to let any gas that may have
accumulated inside the firebox escape. If you smell
leaking gas, follow the directions on the cover "IF YOU
SMELL GAS".
b
Locate pilot in the firebox along the top surface of the
burner. Push gas control knob in slightly and turn
counterclockwise
- Press gas control knob in and hold.
- Immediately press igniter button repeatedly until pilot
is lit.
WARNING: If pilot does not light after 15 seconds,
release knob then follow the instructions above under
"BARRIER SCREEN".
c
Keep the gas control knob depressed for 30 seconds
once the pilot is lit.
d
Release the gas control knob. If the pilot goes out,
repeat steps B and C. If the pilot refuses to stay lit
after several tries, turn gas control knob to "OFF" and
call your dealer for service. With the pilot lit, proceed
to step "e".
NOTE: If knob does not pop up when released, stop, turn
off the gas at the shutoff and immediately call
your dealer for service.
NOTE: If you removed any media or shield, replace in
the original location. Replace the glass if
removed earlier.
e
Turn the gas control knob counter-clockwise
"ON".
With the pilot lit, the heater can be operated using the normal controls. Make sure to return the heater to the
correct configuration before proceeding (replace logs, glass, barrier screen, if applicable).
