Q Can I hook my SLP into my serial port and then hook a
mouse or modem into the other connection at the end of
the SLP cable?
A No. Only one of the two connectors on the SLP cable
can be used. The cable was designed so that it could be
used on either a 9-pin serial port or a 25-pin serial port
connector.
The SLP is a serial device. Optimum installation
mandates the use of a dedicated serial port. This means
that nothing else in the computer is expected to use the
same COM port or shared IRQ, for which the SLP is
configured.
Unfortunately, if you install a new SLP on a serial port
that has never been used before, that's when you may
learn of a malfunction with the serial port. If you can't
determine the cause of the problem, consult a qualified
technician.
Another possible problem is that a serial device (such as
a mouse, modem, tape backup card, scanner, home
security system, network card, certain video card
attachments, etc.) was previously installed on the
computer without a check being made about which
serial interrupts this new device uses. The new device
might have been configured to use the same interrupts
as the serial ports, causing a conflict. The solution for
this problem is to have the new device board
reconfigured to use only those interrupts that are
available. A qualified technician may be needed to
perform this task.
