Chapter 5
Pre-Operation

Check the weather report, wind and water conditions.
Check that the required safety equipment is on board.

Check that the fire extinguisher is fully charged.

Check that bilge drain plugs are installed properly.

Check that no fuel, oil or water is leaking or has leaked into the bilge

compartment.

Check all hoses and connections for leakage and damage.

Check the propeller for damage.

Check the engine cooling water intake pick-up for blockage.
Check that battery terminals are clean and tight.

Check electrical circuits (lights, pumps, horn, etc.) for proper operation.

Check that throttle/shift control is in neutral.

Check that the steering system operates properly.

During Operation
Check gauges frequently for signs of abnormal behavior.

Check that controls operate smoothly.

Check for excessive vibration.

Fill fuel tank to prevent moisture due to condensation.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Federal and local laws require certain safety equipment to be on board at all
times. In addition, responsible boaters carry other equipment in case of
emergency. Check with local boating authorities for any additional
requirements over and above federal requirements.
