Description of SIMOCRANE Energy Storage System Management

The product SIMOCRANE Energy Storage System Management (ESSM) is a global executable
STEP 7 library. It therefore offers a fast and simple method to implement a control-based
software solution for an energy storage system for operation on a SINAMICS S120 DC link. The
energy storage system comprises up to 8 bidirectional SINAMICS DCP power converters of the
same rating class connected in parallel and a lithium ion energy storage device. SINAMICS DCP
power converters of rating class 120 kW are supported.

The SIMOCRANE ESSM Step 7 library provides operating modes, functions and a standardized
interface for the modular design and scalability of an energy storage system in a crane
system. SIMOCRANE ESSM also offers a standardized interface to the crane application.
Typical applications
• Electrification of mobile cranes, e.g. rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, harbor mobile cranes
(HMC), by setting up a controlled DC link from the battery
• Hybridization of fuel-operated cranes (RTG, HMC), e.g. to use a diesel generator in start/stop
operation combined with the battery
• Handling of dynamic peak-load requirements, e.g. to reduce the necessary line connection
power
• Undervoltage supply, e.g. to buffer line supply failures
