This document identifies and describes the 3-Port Channelized DS3/STS-1e Mul-
tiservice Protection module and related safety information. It also includes proce-
dures for installation and removal of the module from the PSAX chassis and veri-
fication of the initial module startup, as well as references to configuration
documentation and troubleshooting assistance. Regulatory standards compliance
is also described for the module.
Instructions on configuring and operating this module, including details on its
N:1 Protection capabilities, can be found in the PacketStar PSAX 3-Port Channelized
DS3/STS-1e Multiservice Protection Module User Guide.
The 3-Port Channelized DS3/STS-1e Multiservice Protection module is illustrated
in Figure 1.

  • Page 3 Description of the Module Functional Description The 3-Port Channelized DS3/STS-1e Multiservice Protection module provides N:1 traffic protection when used within a protection group. In addition to its N:1 Protection capabilities, this module provides ATM, circuit emulation, frame relay, and HDLC Passthrough services with processing power to handle 3 x 672 DS0s. It is software configurable to function in either DS3 or STS-1e modes, permitting you to deliver channelized DS3 or STS-1e configurations while maintaining inventory of a single module type.

  • Page 5 Installing an I/O Modue Begin 1 Remove the module from its box and ESD packaging only when you are ready to install it. Be sure to save the box and the ESD packaging to ship the module in the future if needed. 2 Open the ejector handle at the top of the module faceplate, and slide the module into an available slot.
  • Page 6 Verifying the Initial Startup After you insert the 3-Port Channelized DS3/STS-1e Multiservice Protection module into the chassis, observe the LED status indicators as described in Table 3.   • Page 7 Removing the Module ® Read the PacketStar PSAX Safety Guidelines, which accompanies this product, before proceeding. WARNING: Be sure to use the ejector handles during installation and removal of a PSAX module. 1 Insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab up and out of the locking tab slot (see Figure 3).
