Coolant Pump Replacement
Removal
1. Insure that coolant system is not pressurized in
accordance with the airframe manufacturer's
instructions. Remove four washers and four
nuts. Remove two clamp assemblies and remove
coolant tube assembly from coolant pump.
Remove coolant hoses in accordance with the
airframe manufacturer's instructions.
2. Remove three sets of attaching parts and remove
cover assembly and o-ring from rear of
accessory drive adapter. Remove shim, thrust
washer and bevel gear. Discard o-ring, shim and
thrust washer.
3. Remove four lockwashers, plain washers and
nuts. Remove coolant pump assembly from
accessory drive adapter. Remove and discard
gasket.
The coolant pump assembly must be returned to
TCM for rebuilding or as a core when purchasing a
new or rebuilt unit.
Replacement
1. Install new gasket and new or rebuilt coolant
pump onto accessory drive adapter. Secure
coolant pump to accessory drive adapter with
washers, new lockwashers and nuts. Torque nuts
to 50-70 inch pounds.
2. Install bevel gear into rear of accessory drive
adapter on shaftgear and insure gear slips on
spline freely. Install new o-ring and new thrust
washer on cap with thrust surface away from
bearing. Install cap and bearing assembly on
accessory drive adapter. Apply enough pressure
to top of cap assembly to obtain full gear mesh
and have zero backlash with coolant pump gear.
Pump impeller should not turn freely with
shaftgear held against rotation.

accessory drive adapter. Do not secure cover at
this time.

4. Shim consists of a .024 inch solid shim plus nine
additional .003 inch laminations. Shim thickness
is adjusted by removing laminations until desired
thickness is achieved. Desired shim thickness is
determined by adding approximately .006-.009
inch to previously measured gap between cap
assembly and coolant pump adapter. The result is
the approximate shim thickness required. Remove
.003 laminations until shim thickness is achieved.
Install shim between cap and accessory drive
adapter. Secure with washers, new lockwashers
and nuts. Torque nuts to 50-70 inch pounds.
5. Hold impeller against rotation. The backlash is
measured from the starter shaft free rotational
movement at a diameter of 1.50 inch, the pitch
diameter of the starter shaft drive gear. Total
movement indicates running backlash. Total
movement obtained must be between .004 and
.006 of an inch. If backlash is less than .004 or
more than .006 of an inch, vary shim stock
accordingly
procedure until the required backlash is obtained.
6. Reinstall coolant tube on coolant pump using a
new o-ring, four washers and nuts. Torque nuts to
36-50 inch pounds.
7. Reinstall coolant tube clamps with the following
procedure.
Coolant System Clamps and Tubing
If leakage is evident at any coolant tube junction
where a clamp is installed, perform the following:
1. Cut and remove safety wire securing the clamp
and remove. If the clamp latch or hinge is
damaged replace the clamp. If the clamp inner
sleeve is damaged, deformed, or worn, replace
it.
