Chapter 2: Installation and Setup 3. Hold the CPU over the CPU socket. Use your thumb and index finger to hold the CPU at the center of its long edges. Align the small triangle marker on the CPU to its corresponding triangle marker on the socket.
Page 22
Chapter 2: Installation and Setup 4. Inspect the four corners of the CPU to ensure it is properly installed. Close the load plate with the CPU inside the socket. Gently push the load lever down until it locks under the load lever lock latch. This will secure the CPU under the socket load plate. Caution: Ensure the CPU is properly inserted into the CPU socket before closing the load plate.
Chapter 2: Installation and Setup Installing the CPU Heatsink Do not apply thermal grease to the heatsink or the CPU—the required amount has already been applied. 1. Place the heatsink on top of the CPU so that the four mounting holes are aligned with those on the motherboard and the heatsink bracket underneath.
Chapter 2: Installation and Setup Removing the Heatsink Note: We do not recommend that the heatsink be removed. However, if it must be removed, follow the instructions below to prevent damage done to the CPU or other components. 1. Unplug the power connector from the power supply. 2.
The motherboard will not support an odd-numbered amount of DIMM modules except for a single DIMM module necessary for board operation. Memory Population Guidelines The following memory population table was created based on guidelines provided by Intel to support Supermicro motherboards. Memory Slots DIMMs Slots...
Chapter 2: Installation and Setup Installing Memory ESD Precautions Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage electronic com ponents including memory modules. To avoid damaging DIMM modules, it is important to handle them carefully. The following measures are generally sufficient. • Use a grounded wrist strap designed to prevent static discharge. •...
Chapter 2: Installation and Setup 2.6 Storage Drives The blade has two 2.5" internal storage drive bays. Note: Enterprise level storage drives are recommended for use in Supermicro systems. For information on recommended drives, visit the system web page. Installing a Drive 1.
Chapter 2: Installation and Setup Checking the Temperature of an NVMe Drive There are two ways to check using the BMC Dashboard. Checking a Drive • BMC Dashboard > Server Health > NVMe SSD – Shows the temperatures of all NVMe drives.
Chapter 2: Installation and Setup 2.7 System Cooling Installing the Air Shrouds Air shrouds concentrate airflow to maximize fan efficiency. Screw Path of Air Shroud Figure 2-4. Installing the Air Shroud 1. Bend the air shroud along the path shown above, between the DIMMs and the CPU heatsink and curving to the edge of the motherboard.
Chapter 2: Installation and Setup Checking the Server Air Flow • Make sure there are no objects to obstruct airflow in and out of the server. • Do not operate the server without drive carriers in the drive bays. • Use only recommended server parts.
The JTPM1 header is used to connect a Trusted Platform Module (TPM)/Port 80, which is available from Supermicro. A TPM/Port 80 connector is a security device that supports encryption and authentication in hard drives. It allows the motherboard to deny access if the TPM associated with the storage drive is not installed in the system.

SATA 3.0 with DOM power receptacle connector and one SATA 3.0 right angle receptacle connector. Supermicro SuperDOMs are backward compatible with regular SATA HDDs or SATA DOMs that need external power cables. Set J3 to pins 1-2 to use the SATA port as onboard SATA or pins 2-3 as AOC SAS.
Chapter 3: Motherboard Connections 3.2 Jumpers Explanation of Jumpers To modify the operation of the motherboard, jumpers are used to choose between optional settings. Jumpers create shorts between two pins to change the function associated with it. Pin 1 is identified with a square solder pad on the printed circuit board. See the motherboard layout page for jumper locations.
Chapter 3: Motherboard Connections VGA Enable/Disable Use jumper JPG1 to enable or disable the VGA port using the onboard graphics controller. VGA Enable/Disable Jumper Settings Jumper Setting Definition Pins 1-2 Enabled (Default) Pins 2-3 Disabled ME Manufacturing Mode Close pins 2-3 of jumper JPME2 to bypass SPI flash security and force the system to operate in the manufacturing mode, which will allow the user to flash the system firmware from a host server for system setting modifications.
USB/SATA DVD drive, or a USB flash drive, or the BMC KVM console. 2. Retrieve the proper RST/RSTe driver. Go to the Supermicro web page for your motherboard and click on "Download the Latest Drivers and Utilities", select the proper driver, and copy it to a USB flash drive.
Page 37
Chapter 4: Software 4. During Windows Setup, continue to the dialog where you select the drives on which to install Windows. If the disk you want to use is not listed, click on “Load driver” link at the bottom left corner. Figure 4-2.
The Supermicro website contains drivers and utilities for your system at https://www. supermicro.com/wdl/driver. Some of these must be installed, such as the chipset driver. After accessing the website, go into the CDR_Images (in the parent directory of the above link) and locate the ISO file for your motherboard. Download this file to to a USB flash drive or a DVD.
4.3 SuperDoctor ® The Supermicro SuperDoctor 5 is a program that functions in a command-line or web-based interface for Windows and Linux operating systems. The program monitors such system health information as CPU temperature, system voltages, system power consumption, fan speed, and provides alerts via email or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
This can be found on a sticker on the chassis and a sticker on the motherboard. The sticker also displays the BMC MAC address. If necessary, the password can be reset using the Supermicro IPMICFG tool. Figure 4-5. BMC Password Label The sticker can be found on the pull-out service tag at the front of the chassis.
The JTPM1 header is used to connect a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). A TPM is a security device that supports encryption and authentication in hard drives. It enables the motherboard to deny access if the TPM associated with the hard drive is not installed in the system. Details and installation procedures are at: http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/other/TPM.pdf.
