Tensioning Chain
Disconnect the chain saw from mains before
checking/adjusting the chain saw tension.
Always use gloves when handling the chain.
Always check the chain tension before use, after the first
cuts and regularly during use, approx. every 10 minutes.
Upon initial operation, new chains can lengthen consid-
erably.
Apart from lubrication, tensioning has the greatest influ-
ence on chain life.

Tensioning chain for SDS models
(AKE 30-17 S/35-17 S/40-17 S,
SDS tool-less tensioning system)
– Place the chain saw on any suitable flat surface with
the motor facing downwards.
– Loosen locking knob 14 approx. 1 – 2 turns anti-
clockwise.
– Gradually turn the red tensioning ring 13 clockwise,
until the correct chain tension is reached. The ratchet
effect stops the chain tension from loosening. The ec-
centric cam 31 in the cover plate 15 forces the chain
bar forward via the chain tensioning catch 17. The
locking knob 14 may also turn, when turning the ten-
sioning ring 13.
– The correct chain tension is reached when the
chain 10 can be raised 3 – 4 mm from the chain bar.
– If the chain 10 is overtensioned, turn tensioning
ring 13 anti-clockwise and re-check tension. Re-ad-
just chain tension as described if necessary.
– Handtighten the locking knob 14 fully clockwise, with-
out use of tools.
– Check chain links are correctly located in the slot
around the chain bar 11.

Tensioning chain for standard models
(AKE 3000/3500/4000)
– Place the chain saw on any suitable flat surface with
the motor facing downwards.
– Ensure locking nut 16 is hand tight only.
– Turn chain tensioning screw 24 clockwise using a
screwdriver, until the correct chain tension is
reached. The screwing action forces the chain bar 11
forward via the chain tensioning peg 23.
– The correct chain tension is reached when the
chain 10 can be raised 3 – 4 mm from the chain bar.
– If the chain 10 is overtensioned, slightly turn the ten-
sioning screw 24 anti-clockwise and re-check chain
tension. Re-adjust chain tension as described if nec-
essary.
– Re-tighten locking nut 16 fully with adjustment tool.
– Check chain links are correctly located in the slot
around the chain bar 11.
Lubrication
C
Important: The chain saw is not supplied filled
with oil. It is essential to fill with oil before
use. Never operate the chain saw without
chain oil or at an empty oil reservoir level, as
this will result in extensive damage to the
product.
Chain life and cutting capacity depend on optimum lubri-
cation. Therefore, the chain is automatically oiled during
operation, via the oil outlet 20.
Filling oil reservoir:
– Set chain saw on any suitable surface with oil filler
cap 4 facing upward.
– Clean area around the oil filler cap 4 with cloth, un-
screw cap.
– Do not remove filter insert during filling.
– Add Bosch biodegradable chain saw oil until reservoir
is full.
– Avoid dirt or debris entering oil reservoir, reset oil filler
cap 4 and tighten.
It is important to use only the recommended biode-
gradable oil to avoid damage to the chain saw. Never
use recycled/old oil. Use of non approved oil will in-
validate the warranty.

Starting and Stopping

Starting:
Hold chain saw as described in "Cutting".
Press and hold the safety button 3.
Squeeze the switch lever (On/Off) 2 towards the handle.
Release safety button 3.
Stopping:
Release the switch lever (On/Off) 2.

Chain Brake

The chain saw is equipped with two chain brake systems
for user safety:
The run down brake automatically stops the chain and
motor, after the switch lever (On/Off) 2 is released.
The kick back brake is a safety mechanism activated
through the front hand guard 5, when kick back occurs.
Chain stop response time is 0.1 sec.
E
The following function check should be carried out
at regular intervals: Push front hand guard 5 forwards in
position
and start the chain saw. The chain must not
start. To deactivate the kick back brake, pull hand
guard 5 back into position
also be seen by the deactivation mark 30.
