The plate compactor applies energy to loose soil and other materials to increase density and lift,
and is generally used for minor repairs and maintenance work. Soft soil or particles are moved or
rearranged in a particular manner close to one another to avoid air pockets and voids. It
increases lift, decreases water absorption, prevents soil compaction, reduces swelling and soil
contraction, and prevents frost damage. It is ideal for compaction of granular soils, sand, gravel,
crushed aggregates and mixed soils.
These compactors are not intended for use on cohesive soils such as clay or hard
surfaces such as concrete.
