Installing Main Memory Modules

• The three memory banks must be filled in the order A, B, C.
• Always install a pair of identical modules in bank A. In banks B and C, you
may install a single module or a pair of identical modules.
• Fill as few memory slots as possible, by using high capacity memory mod-
ules, to enable better use of the lowermost ISA backplane slot.

Consequences
Installing a single module in A1, leaving A2
empty, allows only 32-bit access, and leads
to very poor performance.
Installing a pair of identical modules in A1
and A2 allows 64-bit access.
Installing a single module in B1, leaving B2
empty, whilst A1 and A2 are filled with an
identical pair of modules is allowed.
Bank A is accessed in 64-bit widths, whilst
bank B is accessed in 32-bit widths.
Filling all banks prevents the use of the
lowest ISA slot.
This restriction can be avoided by replacing
the four modules of banks B and C by a pair
of modules in bank B of greater capacity.
