Configuration Before the SDM730 radio can be used it must be configured using the Field Personality Programmer (FPP). The configuration process loads the customised channels, signalling and user options so that the radio will operate with the user’s system.

Ignition Sense This allows the radio when set to follow the car ignition to power on the radio. A timer can be set in the FPP for the amount of time the radio remains on after the ignition is switched off. Antenna Installation For optimum radio performance it is recommended that the Antenna be mounted in the centre of the vehicle roof.

3 Basic Operation Turning the Radio On/Off To turn the radio On, press the Home key until the main home screen is displayed. 4 Menu System This section details the operation of the menu system for the SDM730 Mobile Radios. The SDM730 radio software uses a programmed menu structure to enable the operator to access the radio options. The menu structure is shown in Figure 8 and Figure 9.
5 Menu Screens The SDM730 radio software uses a programmed menu structure to enable the operator to access the radio options. The structure of the menu can be configured using the FPP to meet a customer’s specific needs. In simple configurations, no menu can be programmed.
Contact Menu The Contact menu allows the user to select the type of call they wish to make. The choices include: Private Call Contact; Group Call Contact; Phone Call Contact; New Contact; Manual Dial; and DTMF Keyboard. Figure 11: Contact Menu To access any of the options, use the ▲...
Group Call Contacts The Group Call Contact screen is shown below. It can be used to save and list the group call contact information for up to 256 32 entries per .list per list, a total of 1024 groups in up to 32 lists. To add a new contact carry out the following: 1. From the home screen, select ‘Menu’ > ‘Contact’ > ‘New Contact’. 2. Messages The SDM730 radio can receive and transmit preset messages, text messages and status messages with another radio. The Messages menu allows the user to view and check the state of the various digital message systems in the radio. The message system sub-menus are: Inbox, Outbox, Drafts, New Message, Preset Message and Status Message.
The following icons are displayed to indicate the type of message received: Message Icon Message Type Status message. Text message. Table 7: Inbox Message Icons. To scroll through the stored messages, use the ▼ and ▲ keys. For each message stored in the Inbox, by selecting the 'Menu' key the user can View, Reply, Forward, and Delete the selected Message.
Outbox The Outbox is used to store the transmitted (sent) messages. Up to 100 messages can be stored in the Outbox. When the Outbox is full, the oldest message will be overwritten by the latest one automatically. Drafts The Drafts is used to store those messages that have been created but not yet sent. Up to 100 draft messages can be stored in Drafts. New Message The New Message menu option can be used to create, edit and send short text messages. Figure 21: New Message Depending on the system, each message can have up to the following characters: Tier III Trunking - 23 characters. Tier II - 160 characters.
Figure 22: Preset Messages The content of these preset messages can be viewed by selecting the ‘View’ key. The content can only be changed or the whole message by your System Administrator on the FPP. Status Messages Under this option there are some status messages (95 entries at most) preset by your System Administrator on the FPP.
Figure 24: Call Log Menu Screen Radio Information The Radio Information menu provides the user with basic information about the specific radio, such as: radio alias, radio ID, serial number, model name, model number, frequency range, firmware version, data version, vocoder version, and last programmed date.
To access the Function menu, from the home screen, select ‘Settings’ > ‘Function’. Power Level The SDM730 radio can operate at three power levels, Low, Medium and High. The table displays the power level information for the 25W and 45W versions of the SDM730 Mobile Radio. Power Level Medium High Table 9: Power Levels The desired level is set on the Power Level screen.
The Zone menu is used for changing Zones. A Zone is normally defined as a group of radio channels with a common operational role. The SDM730 radio supports up to 32 zones and 2048 channels, with a maximum of 64 channels per zone.

When available, the Global Positioning System (GPS) facility gives the user the option to allow the radio to receive its GPS information from the GPS chipset and upload that information to the system after receiving GPS upload request.
Bluetooth Note: The Bluetooth feature is only available and applicable to certain radios. Please contact your local Simoco representative for further details. When available, the Bluetooth facility gives the user the option of using the radio with a Bluetooth-enabled device (such as Bluetooth earpiece and Wireless PTT) via a Bluetooth connection.
1. From the Bluetooth menu screen, use the ▼ and ▲ keys to select the ‘Search Devices’ option then select ‘Enter’. The Available Devices screen will be displayed and will quickly start a search. Figure 36: Bluetooth Search Progress 2. After a short delay, the search will be completed and the Available Devices screen will show the Bluetooth devices found.
Bluetooth Connected Devices The Bluetooth Connected Devices menu option provides a summary of the devices connected to the radio. It also provides an option to disconnect the device. Figure 39: Bluetooth Connected Devices Icon Description When the radio is successfully connected to a Bluetooth earpiece, the Bluetooth earpiece connected icon will appear on the status bar.
Radio Settings The Radio Settings menu provides access to the lesser used menu options and radio functions including: Date & Time; Display; Menu Reset, Tones; LED settings; Keypad Lock; Vibration; and Language. To access the General Setting menu, from the home screen, select ‘Menu’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Radio Settings’.
GPS Synchronisation The GPS Synchronization feature gives the user the option of having the date and time of the radio synchronised to the GPS Time (UTC). Figure 43: GPS Synchronisation. Date Available when synchronisation is off, this allows the user to set the date in the radio. Time Available when synchronisation is off, this allows the user to set the time in the radio.
Backlight Off Time The Backlight Off menu allows the user to select the timeout period of the control unit’s backlight. Figure 45: Backlight Off Menu When the backlight is enabled, the control screen will be illuminated whenever there is any user activity. The backlight will remain on with no further user activity for the set period, after which, the backlight will turn off.
Brightness The Brightness menu allows the User to set the intensity of the control unit’s display and key backlighting where this is possible. Figure 47: Brightness Menu Use the ▼ and ▲ keys to select the required brightness level. To accept and save the setting, press the ‘OK’ key. Menu Reset The Menu Reset feature, if enabled, allows the user to adjust the time period of menu inactivity before the radio will automatically return to the home screen.

7 Digital Conventional Functions and Operations Calls Private Calls A private call is a call from an individual radio to another individual radio. A private call is a call from an individual radio to another individual radio. The Private Call Contact menu allows user to select the individual radio they wish to call. 8 Analogue Conventional Functions and Operations DMO and RMO Modes The SDM730 radio supports both DMO and RMO modes: DMO - Direct Mode Operation. RMO - Repeater mode Operation. In DMO mode, the radio can be configured using the FPP so that the Rx frequency is consistent with the Tx frequency.

9 Digital Trunking Functions and Operations Note: A license is required for accessing the DMR trunking system. Please contact your local Simoco representative for further details. Registration The radio can be configured with the FPP to automatically register with a base station after power-on.
Selecting a Subgroup through the Subgroup Menu Procedure: 1. Press the Setting key in the home screen. 2. Go to "Subgroup". 3. Use the Up/Down key to select a desired subgroup. 4. Press the OK key to switch to the selected subgroup. Selecting a Subgroup through the Programmable Button If you set shortcut for Subgroup Up/Down, press the shortcut key to turn to the desired subgroup.
Background Hunt This option allows you to determine whether to enable the background feature. To access this item, press the Setting key in the home screen and then select "Hunt - > Background Hunt", or press the shortcut for Background Hunt directly in the home screen.
Encryption (Licenced Feature) Note: The Encryption feature is only available and applicable to certain radios. Please contact your local Simoco representative for further details. The Encryption setting gives the user the option to encrypt voice and/or data communication. The Encryption algorithm in use is ARC4 using a 40 bit key and is a licensed feature.
Making a Private Call A private call can be made through any of the following methods: through Contact or Call Log; via Manual Dial; and through the Redial or Backdial List. Receiving a Private Call When a private call is received, the alert tone is given and the incoming call icon is displayed on the LCD display.
At the Calling Party, a countdown timer is displayed showing the remaining time for a call. The time period is programmed on the FPP and/or the system. The private call will be terminated automatically when the preset time expires. At the Called Party, the actual communication time is displayed. Ending a Call The private call will be terminated when one of the following situations occurs: No operation (PTT key press) is performed within the preset time...
Conversation Limit When a group call is established, both the calling party and the called party will display the call duration in real time. At the Calling Party, a countdown timer is displayed showing the remaining time for a call. The time period is programmed by the dealer. The group call will be terminated automatically when the preset time expires.
