CAUTION
Do not pump the brake pedal if the
D
engine stalls. Each push on the
pedal uses up your reserved vacu-
um.
Even if the power assist is com-
D
pletely lost, the brakes will still
work. But you will have to push the
pedal hard, much harder than nor-
mal. And your braking distance will
increase. Have your brakes fixed
immediately.
ABS (ANTI−LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM)
Helps to prevent wheel lock when the
brakes are applied suddenly, or if the
brakes are applied while driving on a
slippery road surface.
Sounds and vibrations caused by the
ABS, TRC, A−TRC, VSC, hill−start assist
control, and brake−assist systems
A sound may be heard from the engine
D
compartment when the brake pedal is
depressed repeatedly, when the engine
is started or just after starting off. This
sound does not indicate a malfunction
in these systems.
When any of the above systems is
D
operating, the following may occur. This
does not indicate a malfunction.
1. Vibrations may be felt through the ve-
hicle body and steering wheel.
2. A motor sound may be heard after the
vehicle has been stopped.
3. The brake pedal may pulsate slightly
when the ABS is operating.
4. The brake pedal may move down
slightly after the ABS has operated.
CAUTION
Do not overestimate the anti−lock
brake system: Although the anti−lock
brake system assists in providing ve-
hicle control, it is still important to
drive with all due care and maintain
a moderate speed and safe distance
from the vehicle in front of you, be-
cause there are limits to the vehicle
stability and effectiveness of steering
wheel operation even with the anti−
lock brake system on.
If tire grip performance exceeds its
capability, or if hydroplaning occurs
during high speed driving in the rain,
the anti−lock brake system does not
provide vehicle control.
Anti−lock brake system is not de-
signed to shorten the stopping dis-
tance: Always drive at a moderate
speed and maintain a safe distance
from the vehicle in front of you.
Compared with vehicles without an
anti−lock brake system, your vehicle
may require a longer stopping dis-
tance in the following cases:
Driving on rough, gravel or snow−
D
covered roads.
