8. Maintenance

8.1. General
Maintenance serves to preserve reliable operation
and to achieve the longest possible life for the
apparatus. It comprises the following activities:
• Inspection:
• Maintenance: Measures to preserve the target
• Repair:
The maintenance activities must only be carefully
carried out by specialist personnel who are
trained and instructed in the issues of the
respective switchgear, observing all relevant
safety regulations according to DIN VDE/IEC as
well as other higher-level directives. For the
execution of maintenance and repair activities, it
is recommended to consult ABB customer service.
The intervals for inspection and maintenance are
determined for some components (e.g. wearing
parts) through defined criteria, such as switching
frequency, duty time and number of short-circuit
shutdowns. In contrast, for other parts, e.g.
different operating modes, the degree of
utilisation and also any environmental influence
(amongst other things, soiling and aggressive air)
are decisive for determining intervals.
Determination of the actual
condition and comparison with
the target condition
condition.
Measures to restore the target
condition.
For all maintenance activities, the
regulations applicable in the corresponding
country of installation are to be complied
with without fail.
8.2. Inspection
The switching devices are largely maintenance-
free. Intervals for verifications are defined as
follows:
Inspections should be done within the first year
of service. After that following an interval of 3 years
or 1000 switching operations at rated current.
DANGER!
The apparatus contains capacitors (80V)
which are probably charged. All physical
contact with the electronics and electrical
circuits is to be avoided.
Always discharge the capacitors before any
activities.
Before accessing the circuits present in the
control box, it is compulsory to make sure that the
capacitor/s is/are discharged. Even when there is
no auxiliary power supply, more than ten minutes
are needed to completely discharge the
capacitor/s. When the control box is not equipped
with the switch for discharging the capacitors,
the rapid discharing device allows the waiting
time to be reduced to one minute and guarantees
safe access to the circuits which might be live.
