step: Switch on the device
After the EFAS device has been connected to the on-board power supply, the "WELCOME" message will be displayed until the
tachograph has performed all initialization functions.
The welcome message shows the date and the local time (in this case the preset UTC time):
Figure 16 — "WELCOME" message
Following the "WELCOME" message, the following text is displayed for 3 seconds (see figure below). The local language depends

The  symbol also indicates that the EFAS tachograph has not yet been activated. This will continue to be displayed until the
tachograph has been activated. Once the device has been activated, the symbol representing the tachograph's relevant oper-
ating mode will be displayed.

Use the control keys to switch the display and check the settings for the internal clock.
Figure 19 — UTC-display if device is not activated
The UTC display shows the current date and time in UTC time. In parenthesis the time offset of the selected time zone is dis-
played. The
icon (Daylight Saving Time) symbolizes an additional time offset of +1h with respect to the summer time. It
DST
appears only in the summertime period and when the automatic summer time adjustment is enabled (see section 7.1). In Figure
19, the local time therefore is 16:59:13 in the afternoon.

step: Insert workshop smart-card and enter PIN
After insertion, the data on the workshop smart-card can be read out. In the display, the number of the card slot and a symbol
for the smart-card type are shown on the left, along with the name of the card-holder or of the workshop.
Figure 20 — Display of the smart-card owner workshop
The PIN must be entered before the workshop smart-card can be fully read and accepted by the tachograph. The PIN consists of
four to eight characters. These can be digits, uppercase or lowercase letters, or special characters.
Note
The PIN is communicated to the trained specialist separately when the workshop smart-card is issued. This is a
personal security measure. This character sequence must be kept secret and must not be noted on the smart-
card or disclosed to any third party. After 5 unsuccessful attempts to enter the PIN, the workshop smart-card
will be disabled and can no longer be used.
