7.1

Temporary decommissioning

In order to maintain any warranty claims, the operator
must protect the EM-20/39 through preservation
measures in the event of temporary decommissioning.
7.1.1 Decommissioning for up to 6 months
In the case of decommissioning for up to 6 months, the
following preservation measures are required:
Check the corrosion/antifreeze concentration and
adjust if necessary to -20 °C.
Check the coolant pressure and adjust if necessary
to 1.3 bar.
Replace the engine oil with the same amount of
preserving oil and change the filters.
Crank the engine over several times with the help
of the starter.
Remove the spark plugs, preserve the cylinder
combustion chambers with engine internal
preservation spray, then replace the spark plugs.
Seal the intake apertures on the air filter box as
well as all supply air and extract air apertures.
Seal the exhaust pipes and the condensate drain
pipe.
Shut off the gas supply at the ball valve on the gas
train.
7.1.2 Decommissioning for longer than 6
months
When decommissioning the EM-20/39 or
disconnecting it completely from the building structure,
the following additional steps must be taken:
Print out the internal control unit data.
Remove the internal starter batteries and store
them in a suitable location, connected to a charger
with battery maintenance function.
ATTENTION
Battery storage
Risk of freezing
► Protect batteries from direct sunlight.
► Keep batteries free from the risk of
frost.
► If they remain in the system,
disconnect the negative terminal.
Ensure that the plant room is kept free from frost
and draughts during the shutdown.
Subject to the on-site installation conditions, it may
be necessary to cover the machine completely.
However, the cover must be easy to remove for
intermittent inspections.
Drain the oil reservoir and dispose of the oil. If the
date for shutting down the system is known well
enough in advance, it is possible to limit the
30

amount of oil in the reservoir in such a way that the
oil level is virtually zero by the time of shutdown.
Actions to be taken during shutdown:
Perform a visual inspection for leaks every
6 months.
In addition, crank the engine over several times
with the help of the starter. For this purpose, install
the starter batteries and remove the seals from the
appropriate apertures beforehand. Following the
preservation of the cylinder combustion chambers,
return the unit to its original condition.
Permanent and faultless functionality cannot be
guaranteed by the preservation measures.
If the machine is to be used again, carry out a
complete commissioning procedure. This applies in
particular when the CHP unit has been
disconnected from the building structure and/or
extensive alterations have been made to the
peripheral equipment. Several hours of supervised
test operation are also recommended.
7.2

Final decommissioning

Before dismantling, the CHP unit must be
disconnected electrically by an electrician. All
connections to the power supply must be broken
mechanically.
Depressurise the heating water and coolant pipes.
Drain and dispose of heating water and coolant
containing glycol. Remove starter batteries when
the engine is cold and stationary.
Observe the safety instructions for handling the
aforementioned media as well as the applicable
regulations for disposal.
Remove all pipework and cables before lifting the
CHP unit.
Use a forklift truck to place the EM-20/39 on a
transport pallet and secure it with ratchet straps.
Disposal
Deliver used batteries to a collection point. Observe
the transport regulations (GGVS) during transportation.
Never dispose of used batteries with domestic
waste
