    CONTROLS ENGINE SWITCH To start and stop the engine. Switch position: OFF: To stop the engine. To start and run the engine. ENGINE SWITCH STARTER GRIP To start the engine, pull the starter grip lightly until you feel resistance, then pull briskly in the direction of the arrow as show n below . Do not allow the starter grip to snap back against the engine.
  • Page 14: Fuel Tank Cap Vent Lever

    FUEL TANK CAP VENT LEVER The fuel tank cap is provided w ith a vent lever to seal the fuel tank. The vent lever m ust be in the ON position for the engine to run. When the engine is not in use, leave the vent lever in the OFF position to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.

    OUTPUT INDICATOR LIGHT The output indicator light (green) is illum inated w hen the generator is operating norm ally. It indicates that the generator is producing electrical pow er at the receptacles. OUTPUT INDICATOR LIGHT (GREEN) OVERLOAD INDICATOR LIGHT If the generator is overloaded (in excess of 2,000 VA), or if there is a short circuit in a connected appliance, the overload indicator light (red) w ill go ON.

    OIL ALERT SYSTEM The Oil Alert system is designed to prevent engine dam age caused by an insufficient am ount of oil in the crankcase. Before the oil level in the crankcase can fall below a safe lim it, the Oil Alert indicator light com es on and the Oil Alert system autom atically w ill stop the engine (the engine sw itch w ill rem ain in the ON position).

    The Eco-Throttle system does not operate. ECO-THROTTLE SWITCH PARALLEL OPERATION OUTLETS These outlets are used for connecting tw o EU2000i generators for parallel operation (see page ). A Honda approved parallel operation kit (optional equipm ent) is required for parallel operation. This kit can be purchased from an authorized Honda generator dealer.
  • Page 18: Ac Circuit Protector

    AC CIRCUIT PROTECTOR The AC circuit protector w ill autom atically sw itch OFF if there is a short circuit or a significant overload of the generator at the AC receptacles. If the circuit protector sw itches OFF autom atically, check that the appliance is w orking properly and does not exceed the rated load capacity of the circuit before resetting the circuit protector ON.

    GROUND SYSTEM Honda portable generators have a system ground that connects generator fram e com ponents to the ground term inals in the AC output receptacles. The system ground is not connected to the AC neutral w ire.
  • Page 20: Special Requirements

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Keep all cooling holes open and clear of debris, mud, w ater, etc. Cooling holes are located on the side panel, the control panel, and the bottom of the generator. If the cooling holes are blocked, the generator may overheat and damage the engine, inverter, or windings. Do not lay the generator on its side w hen m oving, storing, or operating it.

    AC APPLICATIONS Before connecting an appliance or pow er cord to the generator: M ake sure that it is in good w orking order. Faulty appliances or pow er cords can create a potential for electrical shock. If an appliance begins to operate abnorm ally, becom es sluggish or stops suddenly, turn it off im m ediately.

    When an electric motor is started, the overload indicator light (red) may come on. This is norm al if the overload indicator light (red) goes off after about four (4) seconds. If the overload indicator light (red) stays on, consult your Honda generator dealer.

    Never connect different generator m odels and types. Use only a Honda approved parallel operation kit (optional equipm ent) w hen connecting tw o EU2000i generators for parallel operation. Never connect or rem ove the parallel operation kit w hen the generator is running.

Rated pow er in parallel operation is: 3.2 kVA The total pow er requirem ents (VA) of all appliances connected m ust be considered.

    DC OPERATION The DC receptacle should ONLY be used for charging 12-volt autom otive type batteries. The DC charging output is not regulated. When using the DC output, turn the Eco-Throttle sw itch to the OFF position. Connecting the battery charging cable (optional equipment): Before connecting the battery charging cable to a battery that is installed in a vehicle, disconnect the vehicle battery ground cable −...
  • Page 27 If this happens, w ait a few m inutes before pushing in the circuit protector to resum e operation. If the DC circuit protector continues to go OFF, discontinue charging and see your authorized Honda generator dealer. Disconnecting the battery charging cable: Stop the engine.
  • Page 28: Eco-Throttle System

    ECO-THROTTLE SYSTEM With the sw itch in the ON position, engine speed is autom atically low ered w hen loads are reduced, turned OFF or disconnected. When appliances are turned ON or reconnected, the engine returns to the proper speed to pow er the electrical load. In the OFF position, the Eco- Throttle system does not operate.

    HIGH ALTITUDE OPERATION At high altitude, the standard carburetor air/fuel m ixture w ill be too rich. Perform ance w ill decrease, and fuel consum ption w ill increase. A very rich m ixture w ill also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting. Operation at an altitude that differs from that at w hich this engine w as certified, for extended periods of tim e, m ay increase em issions.

    PRE-OPERATION CHECK ENGINE OIL SAE VISCOSITY GRADES Check the oil level BEFORE EACH USE w ith the generator on a level surface and the engine stopped. Use 4-stroke m otor oil that m eets or exceeds the requirem ents for API service classification SJ or later (or equivalent).
  • Page 31 Rem ove the oil filler cap and w ipe the dipstick clean. Check the oil level by inserting the dipstick into the filler neck w ithout screw ing it in. If the level is low , fill to the upper lim it of the oil filler neck w ith the recom m ended oil.

    REFUELING With the engine stopped, rem ove the fuel tank cap and check the fuel level. Refill the fuel tank if the fuel level is low . Refuel carefully to avoid spilling fuel. Do not fill above the upper lim it m ark. Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive.

    FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS This engine is certified to operate on regular unleaded gasoline w ith a pum p octane rating of 86 or higher. Never use stale or contam inated gasoline or an oil/gasoline m ixture. Avoid getting dirt or w ater in the fuel tank. You m ay use regular unleaded gasoline containing no m ore than 10% Ethanol (E10) or 5% M ethanol by volum e.

    STARTING THE ENGINE STARTING THE ENGINE For your safety, avoid starting or operating the generator in an enclosed area such as a garage. Your generator’s exhaust contains poisonous carbon m onoxide gas that can collect rapidly in an enclosed area and cause illness or death. Carbon monoxide gas is toxic.
  • Page 36 If the choke lever w as m oved to the CLOSED position to start the engine, gradually m ove it to the OPEN position as the engine w arm s If you w ish to use the Eco-Throttle system , turn the Eco-Throttle sw itch to the ON position after the engine has w arm ed up for 2 or 3 m inutes.

    STOPPING THE ENGINE STOPPING THE ENGINE To stop the engine in an em ergency, sim ply turn the engine sw itch to the OFF position. Under norm al conditions, use the follow ing procedure. Unplug appliances from the generator receptacles. Turn the engine sw itch to the OFF position.

    Other service tasks that are m ore difficult, or require special tools, are best handled by professionals and are norm ally perform ed by a Honda technician or other qualified m echanic.

    MAINTENANCE SAFETY Som e of the m ost im portant safety precautions follow . How ever, w e cannot w arn you of every conceivable hazard that can arise in perform ing m aintenance. Only you can decide w hether or not you should perform a given task.

    The follow ing instructions and procedures m ust be follow ed in order to keep the em issions from your Honda engine w ithin the em ission standards. Tampering and Altering Tam pering w ith or altering the em ission control system m ay increase em issions beyond the legal lim it.

Replacement Parts The em ission control system s on your Honda engine w ere designed, built, and certified to conform w ith EPA and California em ission regulations (m odels certified for sale in California). We recom m end the use of genuine Honda parts whenever you have maintenance done.

    AIR INDEX (Models certified for sale in California) An Air Index Inform ation hang tag/label is applied to engines certified to an em ission durability tim e period in accordance w ith the requirem ents of the California Air Resources Board. The bar graph is intended to provide you, our custom er, the ability to com pare the em issions perform ance of available engines.

    Service m ore frequently w hen used in dusty areas. These item s should be serviced by an authorized Honda generator dealer, unless the ow ner has the proper tools and is m echanically proficient. See the Honda Shop M anual.

    ENGINE OIL CHANGE Drain the used oil w hile the engine is w arm . Warm oil drains quickly and com pletely. Turn the engine sw itch and vent lever to the OFF position to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage. Loosen the cover screw and rem ove the m aintenance cover (see page 28 ).
  • Page 45 Wash your hands w ith soap and w ater after handling used oil. Im proper disposal of engine oil can be harm ful to the environm ent. If you change your ow n oil, please dispose of it properly. Put it in a sealed container, and take it to a recycling center.

    AIR CLEANER SERVICE A dirty air cleaner w ill restrict air flow to the carburetor. To prevent carburetor m alfunction, service the air cleaner regularly. Service m ore frequently w hen operating the generator in extrem ely dusty areas. Using gasoline or flammable solvent to clean the air filter can cause a fire or explosion.
  • Page 47 Reinstall the air filters. M ake sure that the rubber seal is set in the groove of the air cleaner cover. Reinstall the air cleaner cover, and tighten the air cleaner cover screw . RUBBER SEAL Reinstall the m aintenance cover, an d t i g h t en t h e co v er scr ew securely.

    SPARK PLUG SERVICE In order to service the spark plug, you w ill need a spark plug w rench (com m ercially available). Recommended spark plug: CR5HSB (NGK) To ensure proper engine operation, the spark plug m ust be properly gapped and free of deposits.
  • Page 49 Visually inspect the spark plug. Replace it if the electrodes are w orn or if the insulator is cracked, chipped, or fouled. M easure the spark plug electrode gap w ith a w ire-type feeler gauge. Correct the gap, if necessary, by carefully bending the side electrode. The gap should be: −...

    SPARK ARRESTER MAINTENANCE If the generator has been running, the m uffler w ill be very hot. Allow it to cool before proceeding. The spark arrester m ust be serviced every 100 hours to m aintain its efficiency. Clean the spark arrester as follow s: Rem ove the four 6 m m screw s, and rem ove the m uffler protector.
  • Page 51 Use a brush to rem ove carbon deposits from the spark arrester screen. Inspect the screen for breaks or tears and replace it if necessary. Check the m uffler gasket; replace if dam aged. Reinstall the m uffler gasket, the spark arrester, the m uffler, and the m uffler protector in the reverse order of rem oval.

    TRANSPORTING/STORAGE TRANSPORTING Do not lay the generator on its side w hen m oving, storing, or operating it. Oil m ay leak and dam age the engine or your property. If the generator has been used, allow it cool for at least 15 m inutes before loading the generator on the transport vehicle.

    After rem oval from storage, fill w ith fresh gasoline before starting. * Use gasoline stabilizers that are form ulated to extend storage life. Follow the instructions included w ith the gasoline stabilizer. Contact your authorized Honda generator dealer for gasoline stabilizer recom m endations.
  • Page 54 Storage Procedure Drain the gasoline. Unscrew the fuel tank cap, rem ove the debris screen, and em pty the fuel tank into an approved gasoline container using a com m ercially available hand siphon. Reinstall the debris screen and the fuel tank cap. Loosen the cover screw and rem ove the m aintenance cover.
  • Page 55 Change the engine oil (see page 42). Rem ove the spark plug, and pour about a tablespoon of clean engine oil into the cylinder. Crank the engine several revolutions to distribute the oil, then reinstall the spark plug. Reinstall the spark plug cap on the spark plug securely. Reinstall the spark plug m aintenance cover.
