NOTE: If one bushing requires replacement, replace
both bushings in the knuckle.
5. Set the dial indicator to zero.
6. Use the pry bar to push the knuckle upward.
Record the reading on the dial indicator.
The reading must be 0.001 to 0.125 inch (0.025 to
0.635 mm) for new or rebuilt axles and 0.001 to 0.065 inch
(0.025 to 1.650 mm) for axles in service (Figure 49).
If the reading is zero, remove the knuckle and remove
the shims from the shim pack. See the Assembly and
Installation subsection earlier in this manual.

Upper and lower king pin bushings
WARNING
Support the vehicle with safety stands. Do not
work under a vehicle supported only with jacks;
jacks can slip or fall over and cause serious
personal injury or death.
1. Make sure the vehicle is on a level surface.
2. Place blocks under the wheels not being serviced
to prevent the vehicle from moving.
3. Raise the vehicle so that the wheels to be serviced
are off the ground. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
4. Check the upper king pin bushing for wear. Install
a dial indicator so that the base is on the I beam and tip is
against the side of the top of the knuckle (Figure 50).
