GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Some D Series coaches may be equipped with the
FullerR Model RTAO-14710-B-AS (semi-electronically
controlled
air-assisted)
transmission (Figure). This transmission features one low
reverse
gear
and
RTAO-14710-B-AS transmission is rated for engines up to
400 hp and 1,450 ft-lbs torque (1936 NSm)
This transmission features heavy-duty cast steel
housings, twin countershaft gear arrangements, fine
pitch "multi-mesh" gearing, two-piece input shaft and
drive gear design, repeat and non-repeating shift
patterns (manually shifted transmissions), air actuated
button operated range shifting, remote shift control and
integral clutch housing release mechanism. Additionally,
the RTAO-14710-B-AS series transmission features
electronically controlled, dual servo motor automatic
shifting within a specific transmission drive range.
The auto-shifted RTAO-14710-B-AS transmission
utilizes computer controlled electric shift motors
connected to the standard three rail repeat pattern, and
air cylinder actuated range shifting function.
NOTE: The RTAO-14710-B-AS auto shift transmission
require clutch disengagement to select the drive
range, either of the two lowest forward gears or the
reverse gear.

COUNTERSHAFTS
Twin countershaft design divides the rated torque
equally between two shafts. Because of torque splitting,
each gear set carries only half the load, greatly reducing
the face width of gears.
The
MAINSHAFT
The mainshaft assembly features the floating gear
principle. These gears, when not engaged by the slide
clutch gears, "float" on or between their adjacent twin
countershaft gears, eliminating the need for gear sleeves
and bushings.
NOTE: Only the countershaft gears which mate with
multi-mesh mainshaft gears have fine pitch gearing
(i.e., first and reverse gears are of the corse pitch
conventional gearing type).
HOUSING
The clutch housing mounts to the engine, and the gear
case and clutch housings bolt directly to each other. The
gear case provides for oil sump, fill and drain plugs,
remote shift control mounting and various bearing and
inspection hand hole covers.
CLUTCH RELEASE MECHANISM
The clutch housing incorporates provisions for the
pull-type clutch release bearing carrier, release yoke,
shafts and adjustable actuating arm. The clutch control
