102D SERIES MAINTENANCE MANUAL
Use the following table to troubleshoot axle problems.
Condition
Tires wear out quickly or
have uneven tire wear
Vehicle is hard to steer
The cross tube ends are
worn.
Bent or broken cross
tube, ball stud, steering
arm or cross tube arm.
Worn or broken steering
ball stud
Worn
king
pins
or
bushings
Vibration or shimmy in
axle during operation

TROUBLESHOOTING

Cause
1. Incorrect tire pressure
2. Out of balance tires
3. Incorrect tandem axle alignment
4. Incorrect toe in setting
5. Incorrect steering arm geometry
6. Excessive wheel end play
1. Low power steering system pressure
2. Steering gear incorrectly assembled
3. Steering linkage needs lubrication
4. King pins are binding
5. Incorrect steering arm geometry
6. Caster out of adjustment
7. Tie rod ends stiff
8. Worn thrust bearing
1. The cross tube ends need lubrication
2. Severe operating conditions
3. Damaged boot on the cross tube end
4. Add on power steering system not
installed correctly
1. Too much pressure in the power
steering system
2. Power steering system cut off
pressure out of adjustment
3. Vehicle not operated correctly
4. Add on power steering system not
installed correctly
1. Drag link fasteners tightened past the
specified torque
2. Lack
of lubrication or incorrect
lubricant
3. Power steering stops are out of
adjustment
1. Worn or missing seals and gaskets
2. Incorrect lubricant
3. Axle not lubricated at the scheduled
frequency
4. Incorrect lubricating procedures
5. Lubrication schedule does not match
operating conditions
1. Caster out of adjustment
2. Wheels and/or tires out of balance
3. Worn shock absorbers
Correction
1. Put specified pressure in tires
2. Balance or replace the tires
3. Align the axle tandems
4. Adjust the toe in to the proper setting
5. Service the steering system as needed
6. Readjust the wheel bearings
1. Repair the power steering system
2. Assemble the steering gear correctly
3. Lubricate the steering linkage
4. Replace the king pins
5. Service the steering system as needed
6. Adjust the caster as needed
7. Replace the tie rod ends
8. Replace the thrust bearing
1. Lubricate the cross tube ends. Follow
the lubrication schedule
2. Operate the vehicle correctly
3. Replace the boot
4. Install the power steering cylinders
correctly
1. Adjust the power steering system to
the specified pressure
2. Adjust the power steering system to
the specified pressure
3. Make sure the vehicle is operated
correctly
4. Install the power steering system
correctly
1. Tighten the drag link fasteners to the
specified torque
2. Lubricate the linkage with the specified
lubricant
3. Adjust the stops to the specified
dimension
1. Replace the seals and gaskets
2. Lubricate with the proper lubricant
3. Lubricate the axle at the specified
frequency
4. Use correct lubrication procedures
5. Change the lubrication schedule to
match the operating conditions
1. Adjust the caster
2. Balance or replace the wheels or tires
3. Replace the shock absorbers
