b) Why is the doctor's reading different from the reading taken at home?
Your blood pressure can vary due to the environment (temperature, nervous condition). When measuring
blood pressure at the doctor's office, it is possible for blood pressure to increase due to anxiety and
tension, this is known as "White Coat Hypertension".
c) Why should I monitor blood pressure at home?
One or two readings will not provide a true indication of your normal blood pressure. It is important to
take regular, daily measurements and to keep records over a period of time. This information can be used
to assist your physician in diagnosing and preventing potential health problems.
1.6 About 3X Averaging
3X Averaging is a technology that enables optimum reliability in self-measurement of blood pressure.
Measurement accuracy is achieved by the automatic analysis of three successive measurements, with rest periods
in between.
1.6A Key Advantages
The technology provides reduction in:
• Insufficient rest prior to measurement
• Movement effects (i.e. coughing, talking, movement)
• Cuff positioning influences
1.6B Measurement Sequence
• Single results are displayed after each measurement is taken. Once all 3 measurements have been
taken the average will be displayed as the final measurement.
• The following illustration provides a flow chart of the 3X Averaging sequence
