  • How do I adjust the spring tension on my Wayne-Dalton TORQUEMASTER PLUS garage door?

    To adjust the spring tension on your Wayne-Dalton TORQUEMASTER PLUS garage door:

    To Add Spring Tension:

    1. Place the pawl knob in the upper position.
    2. Using a ratchet with a 5/8" socket and a 3" ratchet extension, tighten the spring by rotating the winding shaft counter clockwise on the right hand side and clockwise on the left hand side for 3/10 of a turn (three clicks).
    3. Place the pawl knob in the lower position.

    To Remove Spring Tension:

    1. Place a regular 5/8" wrench onto the winding shaft.
    2. Place the pawl knob in the upper position.
    3. Pull down on the wrench to relieve pressure between the pawl and the ratchet wheel.
    4. Push in on the pawl to allow three ratchet wheel teeth to pass as you carefully allow the wrench to rotate upward by the spring tension.
    5. Release the pawl to allow it to engage with the ratchet wheel.
    6. Place the pawl knob in the lower position.

    Important Notes:

    • Extreme caution should be used. If you are unclear on any aspect of the procedures, you should consult a trained door systems technician.
    • It is recommended that leather gloves be worn.
    • Only add or remove a maximum of 3/10 of a turn at a time.
    • For double spring applications, both sides need to be adjusted equally.
    • Do not add or remove more than 1 spring turn from the recommended number of turns.

  • How do you properly wind the springs on a Wayne-Dalton TORQUEMASTER PLUS system?

    To properly wind the springs on a Wayne-Dalton TORQUEMASTER PLUS system:

    • First, check the counterbalance lift cables for equal tension.
    • Attach locking pliers to the track just above the top roller to prevent the door from rising.
    • Turn the pawl knob on the end bracket to the upper position.
    • Using a ratchet wrench with a 5/8" socket and a 3" ratchet extension, wind the spring by rotating the winding shaft counter clockwise for the right hand side or clockwise for the left hand side.
    • Count the turns by observing the black tooth on the ratchet wheel or a mark on the winding shaft.
    • Refer to the WINDING SPRING TURN CHART for the required number of turns for your door.
    • Once winding is complete, place the pawl knob in the lower position.

    Important Safety Notes:

    • Extreme caution must be used, and it is recommended to wear leather gloves.
    • If you are unclear on any aspect of the installation procedures, you should consult a trained door systems technician.
