feeding
For optimal feeding, give small amounts morn-
ings and evenings. Replace left-over food and
make sure the feeder is kept clean.
Notes on when to feed
Well-known bird and nature conservation organi-
sations recommend that feeding the birds be
restricted to the cold winter months. A particu-
larly large number of animals will accept food
during periods of frost and snow. In this way, the
experience of nature comes with an extensive
knowledge of the biodiversity of the local bird
life.
Experts are critical of year-round feeding.
As wild animals, birds are well-adjusted to the
changing seasonal food supply. Feeding outside
the winter months is therefore not only unneces-
sary, but interferes with nature.
In addition, maintaining the necessary hygiene
measures is difficult in warmer months, and this
increases the risk of fatal infectious diseases for
the birds.
However, a species-appropriate feeding of wild
birds in winter draws the attention - and not just
of children - to a responsible and sustainable
approach to animals and nature.
You can also help the birds by making your gar-
den generally bird-friendly - in the autumn leave
perennials alone, apply compost or lay down
piles of leaves.
