microcontroller. It charges free-electrolyte lead-acid
batteries used in motor vehicles (petrol and diesel),
motorcycles and boats, gel type dry batteries and nickel-
cadmium batteries Ni-Cd) (ST 500).
PRECAUTIONS AND BASIC RULES FOR USING THE
BATTERY CHARGER
IMPORTANT:
-
The battery charger should be connected only and
exclusively to a power source with the neutral lead
connected to earth.
- Check that the power supply voltage available
corresponds to the voltage specified on the battery
charger rear panel; check and ensure that the socket
is provided with protective earth connection as
prescribed for equipment in class I
- During charging, batteries give off explosive gases:
avoid the formation of flames and sparks and DO NOT
SMOKE.
- Only use the battery charger indoors, ensuring that there
is plenty of ventilation: DO NOT EXPOSE TO RAIN OR
SNOW.
- Disconnect the power supply cable from the mains before
connecting or disconnecting the battery charge cables.
- The battery charger includes parts such as switches and
relays which can produce arcs or sparks; if used in a
garage or similar environment, the battery charger must
therefore be placed in a room or a suitable housing.
- Install the battery charger in a horizontal position on a
solid base.
- Never use the battery charger inside a motor vehicle or
inside the bonnet of a motor vehicle.
- When installing the battery charger, ensure sufficient
ventilation; do not cover or obstruct the battery charger
ventilation louvers.
- Read, keep and carefully follow the warnings of the motor
vehicle manufacturers when using the battery charger in
charge or start mode; the same applies to the
instructions provided by the battery manufacturer.
- To ensure protection against indirect contacts, only
connect to a suitable socket provided with earth contact.
- Repair or maintenance operations inside the battery
charger must be performed only by expert personnel;
ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE POWER SUPPLY
CABLE.
- Replace the power supply cable with an original one.
- Do not recharge non-rechargeable batteries.
- Check the correct level of the battery fluid; if necessary,
add distilled water following the manufacturer's
instructions.
- Perform battery charging in ventilated environments to
avoid the accumulation of gas.
- Before charging, open the plug of each element (if
present).
- Do not touch the fluid inside the batteries. It is corrosive.
- Remove all oxide furring from the positive and negative
terminals in order to ensure good clamp contact.
- Never bring the two clamps into contact when the battery
charger is connected to the mains; do not connect or
disconnect the clamps to or from the battery with the
battery charger operating.
Caution: before handling the cables, ensure that the
Led "OFF"on the panel is on.
- Check the battery voltage before connecting it to the
battery charger. Remember that a 12 volt battery has 6
caps. In some cases two 12 volt batteries may be
connected in series and in this case a voltage of 24 V is
required to charge both accumulators.
WARNING: Ensure that the settings made on the
battery-charger panel are compatible with the
specifications of the battery to be charged.
STARTING TO CHARGE
- Check the polarities of the battery terminals: positive for
the + symbol and negative for the - symbol.
NOTE: if the symbols are indistinguishable remember
that the positive terminal is the one not connected to the
vehicle chassis.
- Connect the red charge clamp to the positive terminal of
the battery ( + symbol).
- Connect the black charge clamp to the vehicle chassis, at
a safe distance from the battery and the fuel pipe.
NOTE: if the battery is not installed in the vehicle, connect
the clamp directly to the negative terminal of the battery
(- symbol).
- Power the battery charger by turning the switch to ON (if
present) and/or inserting the power supply cable in the
mains outlet.
END OF CHARGING
- Remove the power supply from the battery charger by
turning the switch to OFF (if present) and/or removing the
power supply cable from the mains outlet.
- Disconnect the black charge clamp from the chassis of
the vehicle or from the negative terminal of the battery (-
symbol).
- Disconnect the red charge clamp from the positive
terminal of the battery (+ symbol).
- Store the battery charger in a dry place - Close up the
battery cells with the appropriate plugs (if present).
SIMULTANEOUS CHARGING OF SEVERAL BATTERIES
This operation must be performed with great caution.
WARNING: do not simultaneously charge different types of
batteries with different capacity and discharge.

SAFETY DEVICES

The battery charger is provided with a safety device which
cuts in if one of the following occurs:
- Overload (excess delivery of current towards the battery)
- Short circuit (charging clamps in contact with each other)
- Inversion of polarity on the battery terminals
In equipment provided with fuses, identical spare parts
with the same rated current value must be used when
replacing the fuses.
WARNING: the use of non-identical replacement fuses
can cause injury to persons or damage to things. For the
same reason, never replace the fuse with jumpers made
of copper or other material.
The fuse must be replaced with the power supply cable
DISCONNECTED from the mains.
HINTS FOR STARTING
If possible, before starting always perform a quick battery
pre-charge for 10-15 minutes to facilitate starting of the
vehicle.
