    The 702i uses a NaI detector, while the 711i uses a LaBr detector. With the LaBr detector, the 711i provides an extremely high resolution for Cs at 661 keV of 3.5 to 5%.

Note that if you are using either the Model 702i or 711i unit without a PC, operation is limited to 256 and 512 QCC, including the saving of spectra. Four different nuclide “classes” are defined by their colors, which appear as labels and as filled-in areas in spectra.

    Self-Test and Data Screen When the Model 702i or 711i unit is first powered on, you will see a screen that shows the results of an initial power-on self test, or “POST.” A properly functioning unit will have a display similar to that shown in Figure 3.

    Software The Quantum™ software is a useful tool for advanced users seeking additional analytical capabilities for their Model 702i and 711i spectra. The Quantum software is supplied in two basic configurations, Quantum MCA and Quantum Gold. Quantum MCA, a subset of Quantum Gold, is the "standard" software and provides qualitative, but not quantitative analysis.

    Section Connections The Model 702i and 711i units have two external connectors for power, communications, and other functions. In the back right-hand corner is a watertight connector that provides AC power. There is a flexible, rubber port cover at the top front, and behind it are a CompactFlash slot on the left and an Ethernet connector on the right.

    Whenever the Model 702i or 711i unit is turned off, all information is saved on the CompactFlash card, allowing you to restart the instrument without losing calibrations or other information. The real-time clock has a separate internal lithium battery that keeps it running even when there is no other power source.

It appears yellow when the batteries have between 5 and 10 minutes left, and it appears red when the batteries have less than 5 minutes left.

Certain changes in the spectrum shape, such as that produced by beta particle interactions, can be interpreted by the trained eye, even when it cannot be identified by the automated algorithms.
  • Page 35 The ambient background spectrum is stored and then subtracted from all other collected spectra on a channel-by-channel basis before they are analyzed. It is easy to take a new background on the Model 702i or 711i unit. Simply select the Background soft key and press E .

    The Model 702i and 711i can store nearly 10,000 spectra in its “catalog.” Each stored alarm consists of a spectrum and all the information necessary to analyze it. They are stored in a standard format designed to comply with ANSI N42.42.
