INSTALLING THE BASIC BACK WITH
CLAMP HARDWARE
To install the Jay Basic Back, it is best to begin without a user in the
wheelchair.
1. Remove sling upholstery from wheelchair according to the
wheelchair manufacturers instructions.
2. If an aftermarket cushion is going to be used on the chair,
ensure that it is placed on the wheelchair to ensure proper
back height placement.
3. Visually determine the desired location of the receivers on
the wheelchair's back canes. The mounting hardware should
be at approximately equal heights on each back post (Fig. 3)
and parallel to the seat frame (Fig. 4).
4. Attach the hardware receivers by removing the screws (Fig.
5-A) and wrapping the hinge around the wheelchair back-
canes.
NOTE–
Two sets of screws are included with the Jay Basic Back. For smaller
7/8" tubing, use the shorter screws. For wider 1" tubing, use the
longer screws.
NOTE–
The hinge and the tapered attachment must be aligned when
assembling screws.
Reattach and tighten the screws enough to the secure the
bracket in place. Note that the tapered attachment point
should be facing upwards (B) and the hinge should be facing
forward (C).
NOTE–
For 7/8" tubing, place pin in slot D (Fig. 5).
For 1" tubing, place pin in slot E (Fig. 5).
5. Tighten bracket screws (A) using a 4mm hex key (included
with Basic Back). Note: Back height may require additional
adjustment to ensure proper fit to the user.
6. Align the back shell to the mounting hardware, if the width of
the shell-side hardware needs adjustment, please reference
the adjustment section.
7. Attach the back shell to the mounting hardware by raising
the shell horizontally and lower onto mounting hardware
(Fig. 6). Once the shell is seated properly on the hardware
rotate the shell bottom so that the back shell is in a vertical
position (Fig. 7).
8. Test that the attachment is aligned properly by removing and
re-attaching the back shell. Proper alignment of the mounting
hardware and back is achieved when the back can be
smoothly attached and released.
9. If proper alignment has not been achieved, adjust the compo-
nents (according to step #3) until properly aligned.
10. Once properly aligned, tighten the hardware receiver clamp
screws (Fig. 5-A). The recommended torque specification is
15-20 in-lbs. (1.7- 2.3 Nm).
