PSCUFS implements Avocent solutions
for data center overhaul

PSCU Financial Services is the nation's largest Credit Union Service Organization. Since
1977 the company has provided a broad array of cost-effective, high-quality financial offerings.
In addition to credit, debit and contact center solutions, PSCUFS offers Internet-based
products to over 500 member credit unions and more than 6.5 million cardholder accounts
across the United States.
Perhaps the largest contributing factor to PSCUFS's continued success is the company's
willingness to leverage its specialized knowledge to deliver quality services in the most
efficient manner. This approach was evident when their IT staff was called upon to find a
solution for a big predicament - the expanding data center was having problems keeping up
with the increasing demands of daily operations.
It was a frustrating scenario. As the data center grew, more servers and a larger IT support staff
were needed. The increased support staff created problems with the availability of consoles.
PSCUFS's analog solution limited IT staff to just one monitor and keyboard per switch. The
inefficiency of the analog solution became glaringly apparent as IT staff literally waited their
turn to access servers. In addition to console issues, there were two other pressing needs -
how to integrate new system platforms into what was a somewhat homogenous network, and
how to combine the use of Sun servers with Intel-based platforms. Unfortunately, the analog
system in place did not allow for such a mixing. PSCUFS's access to serial devices also came
under scrutiny. Access to equipment such as switches, firewalls and routers was only achieved
through at-the-rack connections to the console port of each device.
