Small white worms (Enchytraeidae)
 They are also called "white worms". They are tenacious, white and often transparent. They feed on bacteria, fungi, dead
organic matter and enriched mineral soil. Due to their high metabolic activity they play an important role in the decomposition
processes in the soil. In acidic locations, they are among the most important humus-formers. They are more resistant to
moisture and acidic conditions than compost worms. If they multiply too much, check the pH of the soil and add a handful of
garden lime to raise the pH.
Ants or Cockroaches
 Ants or cockroaches indicate that the worm composter is too dry. Pour water over the worm composter and gently stir to
chase the ants and cockroaches out without hurting the worms. To prevent ants getting in, oil the protruding part of the
composter with vegetable oil or Vaseline.
 These omnivores are attracted to food scraps. Avoid putting in any meat products. If desired, uncover the worm composter for
some days a few centimetres, which will make the worms work at lower levels and deter the cockroaches. Make sure the lid is
always closed. To get rid of cockroaches without using baits you could try a 1:1 mixture of baking soda and sugar. Spread it
around the outside of the worm composter.
Maggots
 Maggots in the worm composter mean some meat or dairy probably went into the composter. Place a piece of bread soaked
in milk inside the worm composter overnight. The maggots will be attracted to it. Afterwards take out the bread with the
maggots from the composter.
Mice/Rats
 When mice are in the vicinity of the composter, stop feeding the worms for a week and just add wet newspapers. Make sure
the lid is always closed and the mice cannot get in. Peppermint oil on the outside of the worm composter can deter mice and
rats.
Slaters
 They are beneficial in the worm composter, helping to break down all the compostable material. If you wish to remove them,
you could lay damp newspaper on top of the food scraps overnight, in the morning remove the newspaper with the slaters
attached.
 Slaters can also be an indication that the worm composter is too dry. So, add some water to reduce their population.
Red Spider Mites
 Red spider mites are very common in worm composters. They are usually present when there is bread and protein. These
mites can be a problem if you find your worm population depleting. You can remove them by putting in food overnight that the
mites are attracted to (e.g. watermelon rind). Remove the next morning the watermelon rind with the mites attached. Repeat
the process until you are satisfied with the result.
Earwigs
 Earwigs are harmless creatures in the worm composter. They generally indicate a slightly acidic environment, which can be
remedied easily by adding a handful of garden lime.
Centipedes
 They feed on composting material, small insects and worms. Best to remove them from the composter.
