Preface

Nortel* Metro Ethernet Services Unit (ESU) 1800 is a fixed-port Ethernet device
designed for use as Customer Located Equipment (CLE) at the edge of the service
provider network as part of an Ethernet VPN service. The Metro Ethernet Services
Unit 1800, in combination with the Metro Ethernet Services Module (ESM) 8668,
allows service providers to offer an Ethernet access ring solution that delivers
sub-50ms resiliency and highly efficient bandwidth aggregation in a switched
Ethernet-over-fiber infrastructure.
The Metro Ethernet Services Unit 1800 supports a second mode of operation,
known as the L2-Switch mode, which provides Layer 2 operational services such
as Layer 2 VLANs, IGMP, Spanning tree, and MLT. This allows you to use the
Metro Ethernet Services unit 1800 as a traditional Layer 2 switch, and allows you
to make logical subdivisions within your network, thus increasing network
performance and simplifying management of customer services.
Additional security enhancements are included in both mode of operations in the
latest version of the The Metro Ethernet Services Unit 1800 and includes support
for SNMPv3 and SSH secure login services. The L2-Switching mode provides
additional port level security with the added enhancement of EAPOL (Extensible
Authentication Protocol Over Lan) at the port level.
Three models of the Nortel Ethernet Services Unit 1800 are available:

1800-24T-LX-DC—includes 24 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX (UTP) Fast
Ethernet ports and 2 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) 1000BASE-LX duplex SC type
fiber optic transceiver trunk ports. This model includes a single -48V DC
power supply.
1800-24T—includes 24 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX (UTP) Fast Ethernet ports
and 2 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) trunk ports with bays for Small Form Factor
Pluggable (SFP) Gigabit Interface Converters (GBICs). This model includes a
single 110/220 AC power supply.
