Distributor or magneto
cap cracked
Worn pistons
Excessive valve clearance
Damaged or worn bearing
Low oil; bearings dry
Improper fuel
Ignition too early
Re-time magneto or distribu­
tor, and clean contact
points
Adjust or replace governor
Check coolant level, thermo­
stat, and water-pump drive,
clear fluid or air-flow
obstruction
Thaw out by off-on operation
at 5-min. intervals with
covering over radiator. If
leakage appears in block,
weld crack or replace
engine.
Re-fill, locate leak if oil
use rises suddenly
Reduce load
Adjust belt tension or re­
place belt
Re-time magneto or distribu­
te
If valve-clearance adjust­
ment or valve grinding does
not correct, overhaul en­
gine
Clear obstruction or replace
parts
Re-fill tank; check fuel
feed for dirt or water,
check fuel-cap tank vent.
Locate broken circuit and
repair or replace
Overhaul
Cool and locate cause of
overheating. If bearings
are noisy on re-starting,
overhaul engine
Replace cap
Overhaul engine if notice­
able when warm
Adjust valve tappets
Overhaul engine
Stop immediately to re-fill
oil. Check for noise at re­
starting, and for metal
particles in oil when
drained.
Either use higher grade fuel
or less load
Re-time magneto or distribu­
tor
