6. Inspect the friction spring for damage. Replace spring
if worn.
7. Inspect the rope for broken or frayed areas. Replace
rope if necessary.

Reassemble Rewind Starter

1. Install pulley and spring assembly (G and H) into starter
housing (J). Rotate pulley counterclockwise until slight
resistance is felt, which indicates that the spring hook
(T) has engaged in the anchor tab (U).

2. Install pawl springs (E) with the straight end (V) at the
bottom and the bent end (W) at the top.

3. Install pawls (F). Make sure that bent end of pawl spring
(W) is placed on outside of pawl (F).

4. Install friction spring (D) in center hole of pulley (G).
5. Position pawl friction plate (C) on pulley, then install
shoulder screw (B). Torque screw to value shown in
Section 14 - Engine Specifications .
6. While holding pawl friction plate, rotate the pulley to
extend and retract the pawls. If they do not move
properly, remove and reinstall the friction plate.
7. Turn pulley counterclockwise until the spring is wound
tight. Then allow pulley to unwind slightly until the hole
in the pulley and the eyelet in the housing are lined up.
Secure pulley assembly with a screwdriver to prevent
it from spinning.
8. Insert one end of new rope through pulley (N) and rope
eyelet (P).
NOTE: Make sure that both ends of rope are sealed to
prevent fraying and ease installation. Sealing is typically
accomplished by melting rope ends.

9. Tie a knot at end of rope on pulley side (R). Fit knot into
recess of pulley.
