Troubleshooting

Symptom
Engine will not start manually.
Refer to the engine owner's
manual for engine-specific
procedures.
Engine smokes
Recoil will not pull out or is
difficult to pull

Possible Cause
Verify throttle lever is in RUN position
Verify throttle cable is attached to engine and moves freely.
Air filter may be dirty. Change as necessary.
Replace spark plug(s) if dirty or cracked. If spark plug(s) is oily, leave it out, hold
a rag over the plug hole(s) and crank the engine several times to blow out any oil
in the cylinders. Wipe off plug(s) and reinsert.
Fuel may be old. Change as necessary.

Check engine oil level.
Verify machine is not on a steep incline.
Air filter may be dirty. Change as necessary.
Verify oil type. Engine may smoke if oil is too light for temperature.
Inspect cooling fins. Clean as necessary.

Check engine oil level.
Check for oil compression lock. Remove the spark plug, hold a rag over spark
plug hole, and pull recoil cord several times to blow out any oil in the cylinder.
Try to turn engine pulley by hand and with spark plug removed. If engine pulley
turns the recoil is broken or jammed.
